13 Dead After Pickup Truck Returning from Wedding Is Struck by Multiple Vehicles, ‘Hurling’ Guests onto Highway

At least 13 individuals tragically lost their lives and several others sustained injuries following a devastating collision involving a pickup truck that was transporting wedding guests in Indonesia. This incident occurred on Sunday, 12th July, on a highway located in the eastern part of Java.

The pickup truck, which had been carrying the wedding party, was reportedly struck by a box truck while making a U-turn near the village of Kiajaran Kulon in the Indramayu regency. Local traffic police chief, Undang Syarif Hidayat, informed news outlets that the impact of the collision was severe, causing many passengers to be ejected from the truck onto the highway.

According to various reports, the pickup truck was travelling in an open-bed format, a common practice in some regions. The accident unfolded when the vehicle slowed down to execute a U-turn, and was suddenly rear-ended by another truck moving in the same direction. Hidayat detailed that the initial impact forced the pickup into the opposing lane, where it was subsequently struck by yet another vehicle, leading to the catastrophic results.

Initial reports indicated that three individuals succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while an additional ten died en route to the hospital. The five survivors were transported to medical facilities for treatment, receiving care for a range of injuries from minor to severe.

Syaiful Huda, an official with the Indonesian House of Representatives, has drawn attention to the inherent dangers associated with using pickup trucks as passenger vehicles. Huda emphasised that pickups are primarily designed for transporting goods, which raises significant safety concerns when they are repurposed for carrying people. He stated, “When a pickup truck is used to transport passengers, the risks are very high. If an accident occurs, the potential for loss of life is much greater because the vehicle is not designed to protect passengers.”

Huda’s remarks highlighted a prevalent issue in some parts of Indonesian society, where cost considerations often outweigh safety factors. He urged the Ministry of Transportation to enhance safety education initiatives, insisting that there is an urgent need for greater awareness around the potential risks involved with such vehicles.

In light of this tragic event, authorities have launched an investigation to determine the precise circumstances and causes behind the crash. The police are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry, ensuring that any contributing factors are addressed to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
