The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old KeShawn Emery. Reports indicate that he had been at the outlet mall’s food court accompanied by a cousin when the shooting occurred. Witnesses have described harrowing scenes of panic as the incident unfolded.

Demond Clayton, a patron at the food court, recounted his experience, saying, “I was sitting at the table eating my food and the next thing I heard was ‘boom’ and then another ‘boom.’” He quickly realised that the sounds were not fireworks but gunfire, leading him to instinctively take cover beneath the table. Clayton subsequently began filming the chaotic scene, noting that the mall was vacated within a mere fifteen seconds.
The Auburn Hills Police Department confirmed they had been patrolling the area when they received a report of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found Emery dead and a 19-year-old woman who had sustained injuries that, fortunately, were not life-threatening.
Authorities have identified the shooter as a 22-year-old man who holds a Concealed Pistol Licence. Following the gunfire, he was taken into custody. The police have stated that their initial inquiries suggest Emery and the shooter were involved in a prior altercation within the bathroom of the food court. Following this confrontation, Emery and another unidentified man confronted the shooter in the common area, which led to the physical struggle that culminated in the shooting.
In a press release, the police described the incident as “isolated and tragic,” emphasising that no further injuries were reported among other shoppers. The mall was promptly evacuated and searched to ensure there were no additional threats.
As a result of the incident, Great Lakes Crossing Outlets was closed for the remainder of the day while law enforcement examined the scene. The case is set to be presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for further legal consideration.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office announced their collaboration with local police in the ongoing investigation, fostering a well-coordinated response to the distressing event. In their official communication, the police expressed gratitude for the support received from various law enforcement partners and the mall’s security staff during this incident.
In light of the tragedy, many have been left processing the implications of such violence in public spaces, underscoring ongoing concerns regarding safety and security in community environments. As the community comes to terms with the incident, the focus now shifts to an investigative process that seeks to unravel the circumstances leading up to this unfortunate event.
As of yet, attempts to gain further insights from the Auburn Hills Police Department and the management of Great Lakes Crossing Outlets have not yielded immediate responses. As the situation continues to develop, more information is expected to emerge in the coming days.
