Tennis legend Björn Borg, widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest players, has seen both of his sons follow in his dynamic footsteps, adding to the family’s athletic legacy. Known for his exceptional talent on the court, Borg’s accomplishments include five Wimbledon titles and six French Open victories. The influence of his sporting career has undoubtedly resonated with his children, Robin and Leo, who have both navigated the world of athletics in their own distinct ways.

Robin Borg, born in September 1985, embarked on a tennis journey during his teenage years. Raised by his mother, Swedish model Jannike Björling, after his parents’ separation in 1987, Robin displayed considerable talent in tennis, eventually attending a tennis academy in Sweden. He was awarded a scholarship to the University of Alabama in 2004, although he deferred his studies to gain further experience before enrolling at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater three years later.

Despite Robin’s duelling passions for tennis and education, he made the decision to focus on his academic career rather than pursue professional tennis. “My primary reason for coming to the United States is to receive a college education and to play tennis,” he explained in 2007. Although he wielded a powerful serve, he aimed to carve out his own identity outside of his father’s considerable shadow. “I feel I am just ‘Robin Borg,’ not ‘the son of Bjorn Borg,’ and that is very important to me,” he remarked, reinforcing his desire for independence from parental fame.
Now 40, Robin has transitioned from player to entrepreneur, running his own sports agency, Core Sports, which primarily supports ice hockey players. His journey illustrates a shift from competitive tennis to a focus on sports management, reflecting the diversity of opportunities available within the athletic world.
In contrast, Leo Borg, born in May 2003, took a different path, embracing the sport his father is synonymous with at an early age. Initially showing prowess in soccer, Leo’s swift pivot to tennis surprised his parents. Björn has openly shared his initial reluctance regarding Leo’s interest in tennis, concerned about the inevitable comparisons to his own illustrious career. Nevertheless, it became clear that Leo had developed a genuine passion for the sport, which he pursued with fervor.
Speaking candidly about his family’s heritage, Leo stated, “I understand it. It’s not bothering me so much. I’ve always known who my dad is.” This ability to compartmentalise his father’s legacy has allowed Leo to cultivate his own career as a professional tennis player without feeling overshadowed. At just 23 years old, Leo already showcases significant potential in the sport, balancing the legacy of his father’s fame with his individual aspirations.
In 2017, Leo took his connection to the sport even further by portraying his father in the biographical film *Borg vs. McEnroe*, which chronicles the intense rivalry between Borg and the American tennis star. This role provided not only an opportunity to honour his father’s legacy but also a unique platform to engage with both tennis and acting.
Björn Borg, who continues to support both his sons in their endeavours, reported that he enjoys watching Leo compete but admits that the experience comes with its own set of anxieties. “Ask any parent. You get more nervous watching your child play,” he reflected. He remains actively involved, discussing the game with Leo when they can meet, though he emphasises that he does not personally coach his son.
As each of Borg’s sons forges their own identity in the sports arena, their paths exemplify the multifaceted nature of familial legacy. While Robin opted for a strategic role behind the scenes in sports management, Leo embraces the thrill of competition at the professional level. This dynamic reflects the diverse ways that parents can inspire and influence their children’s choices while empowering them to carve out their unique pathways.
As the Borg family continues to navigate the sporting landscape, both Robin and Leo are redefining what it means to carry the weight of a name synonymous with tennis greatness. In doing so, they are ensuring that the legacy of Björn Borg is not merely a story of past triumphs but an evolving narrative that includes their own aspirations and achievements on and off the court.
