Following the death of her grandmother, Shannon McKinstrie presumed she had bid farewell to the treasured summer home of her childhood for good. The family’s cottage on the idyllic Outer Banks, built by her grandparents in 1978, held a special significance for her and her relatives, who spent countless summers creating enduring memories within its walls.

McKinstrie recalls how her grandparents purchased two plots in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, where they constructed what her grandmother affectionately termed their “cottage.” “At that time, the area was far less developed than it is today,” she explained to a reporter from PEOPLE. The simplicity of the home remained a grounding presence as the Outer Banks evolved around it. With time, the family expanded the cottage to accommodate new arrivals and ensure plentiful memories were created.
Despite the cottage being a vital part of her upbringing, the years took a toll on the family. McKinstrie’s grandfather passed away in 2006, and slowly her grandmother began to visit less frequently, while McKinstrie maintained her personal connection through summer visits with friends. After her grandmother’s passing in 2022, the house transitioned into a trust, marking what McKinstrie believed to be her final visit. With heavy hearts, the family took one last trip to the beloved home to say goodbye.
In a moment of reflection during this period of grief, McKinstrie asked her father if it might be possible to acquire the adjacent vacant lot that her grandparents had never developed. However, she had little hope that such a dream could materialise. The family’s financial pressures meant that buying the cottage itself was simply not an option due to the significant repairs it required.
McKinstrie’s perspective shifted dramatically when her husband made a remarkable discovery. While she was engulfed in work as a coping mechanism, he found an old business account containing an income that had gone unnoticed. “The income I earned from social media services had been sitting untouched,” she explained. After digging further, they uncovered an underutilised Stripe account that McKinstrie had completely overlooked.
When they accessed the account, they were stunned to find that the remaining balance was the precise amount necessary to purchase the vacant lot next door. This serendipitous revelation filled McKinstrie with an overwhelming sense of hope. “It was a moment of pure magic that I will always remember,” she expressed. Following the discovery, their plans moved swiftly, and by July 2024 they began constructing a new home on the lot, with the project expected to reach completion by May 2025 at an estimated cost of £600,000.
As they embarked on the building journey, McKinstrie and her husband were involved in every aspect, from planning the layout to selecting the final touches. “We wanted to ensure that our new home reflected our family’s heritage,” she said. Today, alongside her grandparents’ original cottage, their new residence stands as a testimony to continuity and family tradition.
The design features deliberate nods to McKinstrie’s grandparents, integrating elements from the original cottage into the new home. They repurposed cherished items, such as the fish identification posters that had adorned their walls since the 1970s and cushions from her grandmother’s wicker bench. The orange front door was painted as a tribute to the kitchen floor of the cottage, and they even incorporated a retro orange fridge, evoking cherished memories.
For McKinstrie, the aim of this venture was to ensure that family gatherings could endure the test of time. “When the original cottage was sold, I feared our summers together had ended. Building next door was not about replacing it; it was about creating a new space for connections and traditions,” she articulated, highlighting her commitment to preserving her family’s legacy.
The reward for McKinstrie has been watching her children forge their own memories alongside the cousins she grew up with. “Seeing my daughters enjoying the same beach days and family dinners that I experienced reinforces why we built this home,” she said with a sense of fulfillment.
Though renovations and additions are still on their agenda, the McKinstrie family is eager to fill their new home with laughter and camaraderie. Reflecting on the journey, she noted, “Being able to keep our family traditions alive is a blessing, and I cherish every moment of it.”
Ultimately, McKinstrie believes that her grandparents did more than build a cottage—they created a sanctuary where family could reconnect. “Even though the walls are new, our story began in 1978, and I hope my daughters will cherish this home just as I did,” she optimistically concluded. As they embark on countless new summers in the Outer Banks, the McKinstries remain committed to nurturing their family legacy.
