The event took place on Tuesday, July 7, at a property located on Gene Reed Road in east Birmingham. Following a funeral service, approximately 15 people, including children and elderly relatives, had gathered on the deck to take a group photograph. Suddenly, the raised structure gave way, resulting in a chaotic scene.

Renae Jackson-Watson, a family member present at the time, recalled the moments leading up to the collapse. “We were adjusting ourselves, trying to get in a position for a family picture,” she told local news outlet WBMA. “It just collapsed. It just gave way, just out of nowhere.” Jackson-Watson described the event as “horrific” and “scary,” particularly as it occurred shortly after laying her uncle to rest.
Witness reports indicate that approximately seven individuals fell during the incident. Although many sustained injuries, none were reported to be life-threatening. A few family members experienced soreness due to their falls, while one person injured their shoulder. Birmingham Fire and Rescue confirmed that while several people were hurt, none required hospitalisation.
Footage from the scene revealed the deck’s perilous condition after the collapse. The rear section of the structure had fallen to the ground, while the front half remained precariously tilted at a 45-degree angle, supported only by its beams. Fragments of wood were visible, snapped and protruding from the remains of the deck, with overturned chairs marking the chaos of the moment.
Angelica Glover, who had arranged the rental for the family’s post-funeral reception, stated that she has reported the incident to Airbnb. She has held discussions with both the company and the property owner, who expressed regret over the situation. Glover emphasised her dissatisfaction with how such a significant safety oversight could occur, especially during what was meant to be a day of remembrance for the family.
Jackson-Watson expressed relief that her family members escaped life-threatening injuries but lamented the unfortunate timing of the accident. “It was devastating. It was shock. My family and I were standing on this porch, and then suddenly, it just gives in and everyone falls. There was screaming, babies crying. It was horrific,” she said.
The distressing event has sparked further conversations about safety protocols within short-term rental properties. Incidents such as these often prompt scrutiny, leading to calls for stricter regulations to ensure that rental homes adhere to safety standards that protect guests.
As families increasingly turn to vacation rentals for gatherings, the need for accountability from platforms like Airbnb becomes more significant. Locals are beginning to voice concerns over the assurance of safety in these environments, urging both property owners and rental companies to take preventive measures.
In the aftermath of the collapse, the Birmingham Fire and Rescue has not publicly commented further on the specific condition of the property or whether inspections were carried out prior to the rental being made available. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the grieving family, reminding them of their loss while also highlighting the need for greater awareness of safety in rented spaces.
