Josh Duggar, a former star of the reality show ’19 Kids and Counting’, has been relocated to FCI Elkton, a federal correctional institution in Ohio. This move comes as part of his ongoing 12-year sentence for possession of child sexual abuse material, following his arrest in April 2021 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Records from the Federal Bureau of Prisons indicate that Duggar, 38, transferred on July 8, 2023, from FTC Oklahoma City, a holding facility primarily designated for newly-convicted inmates awaiting a permanent assignment. The facility in Ohio, situated more than 850 miles away from his family home in Arkansas, is described by the Bureau of Prisons as a “low security federal correctional institution”, which includes a neighbouring low-security satellite prison. FCI Elkton currently houses over 2,000 inmates.

This transfer marks Duggar’s third relocation since he was sentenced in 2022. Prior to his time in Oklahoma City, he spent nearly four years at FCI Seagoville, which is located just outside Dallas. Despite his time at various facilities, the reasons for his transfer to the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth in May remain unspecified. When questioned about the permanence of his assignments, officials from the Bureau of Prisons opted not to comment.

Duggar’s current location in Ohio places him significantly far from his wife, Anna Duggar, and their seven children, who reside in northern Arkansas. Since his arrest, the repercussions of Duggar’s actions and subsequent legal battles have had a profound impact on his family, which has come under scrutiny.
Just one month before the transfer, Duggar’s appeal to vacate his 2021 conviction was denied by a federal judge. Duggar had claimed that his constitutional rights were infringed during the trial which dealt with complex evidential issues and the admission of forensic evidence. U.S. District Judge Timothy L. Brooks dismissed the appeal, stating that Duggar had submitted his motion beyond the filing deadline, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office receiving a copy on July 29, 2025.
The nature of the charges brought against Duggar has not only tarnished his reputation but has also led to significant controversy within his family, particularly following allegations against his brother, Joseph Duggar, regarding past misconduct involving a minor. These developments have continued to cast a shadow over the Duggar family, previously known for their television appearances celebrating large family dynamics and religious values.
While in custody, Duggar has stated he has been making efforts to focus on personal development and maintaining family ties. He initially filed for an appeal in October 2023, only for it to be swiftly rejected. Duggar later escalated his case to the Supreme Court, but once again faced defeat.
Looking towards the future, records suggest that Duggar is scheduled for release in February 2033, contingent upon good behaviour and compliance with prison regulations. As the legal and familial implications of his actions unfold, the Duggar family remains a focal point of media attention.
