The K-pop scene is witnessing a bold new contender in the form of the multinational group, XLOV. Debuting in January 2025, the ensemble has already carved a unique niche with their “genderless” concept, which seeks to defy conventional gender norms through innovative styling and sound. Comprising four dynamic members—Wumuti, Rui, Hyun, and Haru—the group has amassed an impressive fanbase of over six million across social media platforms, affectionately dubbed EVOLs.

Recently, the group treated a sold-out New York City theatre to a vibrant showcase of their talents, performing for the first time in the city. Dressed in striking grey outfits, the members took turns introducing themselves, culminating in a high-energy performance that left attendees craving more. “We bring dance, we bring vocals, we bring face cards, we bring vibes, so there’s no reason for you to not be there,” Wumuti passionately declared, setting the stage for their ambitious plans, including an upcoming U.S. tour.
The journey to success for Wumuti, 26, Rui, 25, Hyun, 23, and Haru, 20, has not been an easy one. All four members faced years of intense training and numerous setbacks in a notoriously challenging industry. Their stories drew them together during a survival show in early 2023, where they were initially among 98 contestants vying for a chance to debut. Though none made the final cut, the experience forged a bond that would ultimately lead to the formation of XLOV.

Reflecting on this challenging period, Wumuti shared, “Looking back now, I think it is one of the most valuable chapters of our lives… if we hadn’t gone through that experience, we wouldn’t be here today.” His determination to form a group steadfastly rooted in friendship and mutual respect was crystallised after nearly a decade of navigating the world of entertainment.
As Rui explained, his path was anything but straightforward. The trained dancer experienced a rollercoaster of feelings during his four years of training, shifting from one company to another in search of a place where he felt at home. Hyun’s seven years of training, on the other hand, were largely spent out of the public eye, focusing on perfecting his craft behind closed doors. He remarked, “It was quiet, but it taught a lot of perseverance and patience.”
Wumuti was thoughtful about bringing his friends into this venture, understanding the weight of such a request. “It’s a decision that could shape all of their futures,” he noted, reflecting on the responsibility he felt towards their collective career.
XLOV’s innovative “genderless” theme challenges the rigid constructs of traditional gender roles that have long persisted in society. Through a combination of stylistic choices—ranging from skirts paired with jackets to an array of hairstyles—the group presents a fresh vision for K-pop. Wumuti articulated the importance of this ethos, stating, “Why do gender roles create so many stereotypes and put people into just two boxes?”
For member Hyun, donning bold outfits and elaborate makeup invokes a sense of euphoria, allowing him to express all facets of his identity. “It’s given me a kind of confidence I never experienced before,” he said, highlighting the transformative power of their artistry.
While the group appreciates the outpouring of support from diverse fans, they are aware that their concept might not resonate with everyone. Wumuti acknowledged that responses to their work vary widely, emphasising, “We respect that not everyone will see our work in the same way.” This nuanced understanding underlines their intent to offer perspectives rather than impose beliefs.
XLOV’s captivating persona has sparked inspiration among their fans. One notable letter from a young admirer revealed how witnessing Hyun encouraged them to embrace their individuality for the first time. Hyun expressed gratitude for such moments, reminding himself of the powerful impact their art has on the lives of others.
Creatively, Wumuti is deeply involved in XLOV’s music, contributing writing credits to 13 out of 16 songs in their discography. Describing this artistic freedom as a privilege, he strives to ensure that the music they produce reflects their authentic selves. Labelled as “Mother” by his fellow members, Wumuti takes pride in nurturing both their well-being and collective aspirations.
Looking ahead, XLOV harbours lofty ambitions, aspiring to achieve accolades such as music show wins and even Grammys. However, Haru articulated a deeper hope for the group, stating, “We want people to hear the name XLOV and immediately understand that it represents a unique way of thinking, creating, and expression.”
As the K-pop landscape evolves, XLOV stands ready to challenge conventions and captivate audiences worldwide with their distinctive vision and unwavering commitment to authenticity.
