Alison Arngrim, known for her iconic role as Nellie Oleson in the classic series ‘Little House on the Prairie’, has returned to the beloved saga in a surprise cameo in the Netflix reboot. The new adaptation of the show premiered on 9 July and features Arngrim portraying a character named Ida – a whimsical yet troubled figure who encounters Laura Ingalls and her sister while exploring the woods.

In an interview with Tudum, Arngrim described her character as “a crazy lady in the woods” who drifts around with her companions, adding a layer of intrigue to the narrative. The Ingalls sisters, while searching for their friend John Edwards, stumble across Ida and her group during a woodland excursion. Upon learning that John is with them and will soon return, the girls initially feel at ease. However, as time passes and concern grows, Laura’s anxiety manifests in an impulsive attempt to flee, leading to a tense moment where she bites Ida in self-defence.

Arngrim’s involvement in the revival was somewhat spontaneous. She shared that she was contacted just two weeks before filming was set to begin. “I got a phone call: ‘What are you doing in a week and a half? Could you come to Winnipeg? There’s this character, we want it to be you,’” she recounted. The actress was thrilled at the prospect of returning to the series that had significantly impacted her career.

This new role offered Arngrim a chance to step into a character markedly different from her infamous childhood nemesis, Nellie. She described the scenario in which her character engages with the Ingalls sisters as “creepy,” a sentiment she found appealing. “Oh, that’s creepy as all get-out. That sounds right up my alley,” was her initial reaction to the script.
There had been uncertainty earlier this year about whether any original cast members would return for the Netflix revival. In February, Arngrim had expressed her openness to the idea but confirmed that she had yet to be approached at the time. “I’ve been joking for years that I’m finally old enough to play Mrs. Oleson, so call me,” she quipped, indicating her eagerness to participate in the narrative once more.
Upon setting foot on the new production’s set, Arngrim was struck by the differences in styling compared to the original show. While the cast of the classic series often donned camisoles and bloomers, Arngrim was treated to a more elaborate costume for her role as Ida. “They proceeded to make me look like I took much less care of myself than I actually do,” she joked, noting that her teeth and nails were purposely altered to reflect her character’s rough lifestyle.
Reflecting on her past role as Nellie Oleson, Arngrim remarked how people still approach her to inquire about her character’s notorious antics. “Apparently, I did it right,” she stated, acknowledging the duality faced by characters like hers in that a well-played villain often becomes beloved over time. “The trick is, if you do it right, everyone will hate you; and if you really do it right, they’ll eventually love you,” she noted, highlighting the unique relationship she shares with her fans.
In regards to the new portrayal of Nellie, a character that will continue in future episodes with actress Willa Dunn taking on the role, Arngrim shared some advice. “Take it and run with it. Enjoy yourself. As far as I know, it’s the most fun part to play ever,” she advised, recognising the challenges and joys of portraying such a complex character.
With the new adaptation now streaming on Netflix, audiences can once again immerse themselves in the world of the Ingalls family and witness the colourful characters that enrich the narrative. Alison Arngrim’s return as Ida highlights the enduring legacy of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ and its ability to evolve while paying homage to its roots. As fans tune in, they can not only enjoy the fresh dynamics of this revival but also appreciate Arngrim’s heartfelt connection to the series that first made her a household name.
