JetBlue Airways is making significant strides in expanding its services at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) as it moves to capitalise on the market gap left by the abrupt shutdown of Spirit Airlines. The Florida airport was a critical hub for Spirit Airlines, which held approximately 24% of the market share as of April 2026 before ceasing operations on May 2. With many former Spirit customers seeking alternatives, JetBlue is ready to seize the opportunity.

In a bold move, JetBlue has recently introduced eight new nonstop routes from Fort Lauderdale, with plans to roll out six more in the near future. This expansion is projected to bring the total number of daily departures offered by JetBlue to around 130, with ambitions to reach approximately 150 by the winter season. JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty expressed enthusiasm for the Fort Lauderdale market, stating, “We knew, as most of the public knew, that Spirit was not great. They filed for bankruptcy twice, so we’ve been preparing for this day over the last months.”
To support its growth, JetBlue is prioritising the hiring of personnel, including former employees of Spirit Airlines. The abrupt closure of Spirit left about 17,000 workers seeking new opportunities, and JetBlue has assured that it is actively reviewing applications from these individuals. While the exact number of hires has not been disclosed, Geraghty confirmed that the airline aims to staff its growing operations by bringing in experienced crew members from the former carrier.
JetBlue’s renewed focus on Fort Lauderdale comes amidst plans to enhance its competitive edge over nearby Miami International Airport. According to Geraghty, operating costs are significantly lower at Fort Lauderdale, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travellers. “When compared to Miami, Fort Lauderdale is significantly lower,” she noted, emphasising that these cost benefits directly influence ticket pricing. JetBlue aims to strike a balance between affordability and offering a quality travel experience, despite rising fuel and labour expenses.
As part of its growth strategy, JetBlue is also exploring the potential acquisition of certain assets from Spirit Airlines, which are set to be auctioned through the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York. However, Geraghty clarified that the airline does not have any interest in acquiring Spirit’s former headquarters located in Dania Beach, which is less than five miles from the airport. “We’ve got a pretty sizable footprint here already,” she said, indicating a preference to focus on operational assets that will directly benefit JetBlue’s expansion strategy.
The transition at Fort Lauderdale Airport is an example of how market dynamics can shift quickly within the aviation industry. With Spirit Airlines out of the picture, competitors like JetBlue are not only looking to attract former Spirit customers but are also positioning themselves to capture a larger share of the overall market. The strategic addition of new routes and increased departures highlights JetBlue’s ambition to solidify its presence within the region.
JetBlue’s focus on providing a high-quality customer experience is evident in its commitment to expanding its offerings. By ensuring a robust network and engaging qualified staff, the airline hopes to establish itself as a leading choice for air travel in South Florida. As the post-pandemic travel landscape continues to evolve, JetBlue’s proactive measures at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport may pave the way for a successful transition and increased patronage.
In summary, JetBlue’s bold expansion in Fort Lauderdale, paired with strategic hiring and potential asset acquisition, sets the stage for a transformational shift in the local aviation market. As the airline prepares for a busy winter season, all eyes will be on how effectively it can attract former Spirit customers and carve out its niche in a fiercely competitive landscape.
