A seven-year-old boy, Cashmere Elijah Parker, tragically lost his life following a fire ignited by illegal fireworks near an apartment complex in North Carolina. The incident, which also left his stepfather and another individual injured, has raised serious concerns regarding safety regulations and enforcement in residential areas.
The fire erupted shortly before 11 p.m. on Saturday at the Ashbrooke Apartments located on East Pope Street, according to the Dunn Fire Department. Reports indicate that the blaze caused extensive damage to four apartments, three of which were occupied at the time. Family members identified the boy who perished as Cashmere Elijah Parker.

Witnesses revealed that Cashmere was in his parents’ apartment when the fireworks struck the complex, initiating the fire that unfortunately trapped him inside. His stepfather sustained injuries while attempting to rescue him, as did another individual who bravely tried to save Cashmere from the flames.
During a police press conference held on July 7, authorities from the City of Dunn confirmed that the fire was ignited by illegal fireworks that had been improperly handled and set off near the building. Dunn Police Chief Timothy “Lynn” Gay highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting that only days before the incident, management had issued warnings to residents against using grills and fireworks on the premises.

Gloria Parker, Cashmere’s distraught mother, expressed her profound grief during an interview, stating, “You don’t know the pain if you never lost a child. I’m still grieving over my mother three years ago. Now this is killing me. It’s killing me. I’m hurting.” Heartbreakingly, Parker recounted that she witnessed her son’s final moments through CCTV footage, which showed him desperately knocking on doors and windows, calling for help.
In connection with the incident, Brittany Armstrong has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Following the tragedy, she failed to surrender herself to authorities and was subsequently apprehended at a hotel in Fayetteville. Armstrong faces multiple charges, including burning certain buildings and possession of pyrotechnics, with her next court appearance scheduled for July 28.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to alleviate the financial burden on Cashmere’s family, who now face funeral costs and the challenges of temporary housing, following the destruction of their belongings in the fire. The fundraiser emphasizes the overwhelming nature of the tragedy, stating, “As this family faces unimaginable grief, they are also dealing with the overwhelming financial burden of funeral expenses, temporary housing, replacing personal belongings, and other unexpected costs brought on by this devastating fire.”
The campaign urges community members, friends, and neighbours to contribute to the family’s cause, asserting that “no donation is too small” and that every bit of help can ease the financial strain as they mourn the loss of their beloved child.
In light of the incident, local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the use of illegal fireworks and to emphasise the need for adherence to safety regulations to prevent future tragedies.
As this heartbreaking story unfolds, the City of Dunn Police Department and Dunn Emergency Services have been approached for further comment but have not yet issued a response.
The community remains in shock as they grapple with the loss of young Cashmere Elijah Parker, a child whose life was tragically cut short due to irresponsible actions that have had catastrophic consequences for his family and the wider community. Such incidents serve as a solemn reminder of the importance of adhering to safety standards, particularly during celebratory occasions like Independence Day.
