Shailene Woodley has received her second Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Annie Clay in the second season of ‘Paradise’. This marks a significant milestone in her career, as it comes a decade after her initial nomination. The actress, now 34, joyfully learned of the news during an unexpected lash lift appointment, accompanied by a few friends.

The nomination announcement for the 78th Emmy Awards was made on July 8, while Woodley found herself in a rather unusual setting. She was persuaded by one of her friends to try a lash lift, a beauty treatment she had never experienced before. “I asked how long it would take, and the technician said it would last about 20 minutes,” she recounted. “However, I ended up lying on the bed with my eyes closed for an hour and a half.”
During the treatment, Woodley’s other friend alerted her that her phone was receiving numerous notifications. It was at that moment that she discovered her Emmy nomination. “I found out with my eyes shut and had some blind FaceTimes with friends, which was really lovely,” she shared with Variety.
Expressing her joy at the nomination, Woodley commented on the significance of the recognition. “It’s so exciting to be nominated again, ten years after my first nod. I love what I do so much, and while winning awards isn’t the main reason I act, it truly feels like such an honour,” she said. “I grew up watching the Emmys, so being included keeps that little girl in me alive.”
This year, she has been nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, competing against other talented actresses such as Miriam Shor in ‘Pluribus’, Merritt Wever in ‘The Gilded Age’, and Brittany Allen among others in ‘The Pitt’. Woodley’s previous Emmy nomination came in 2017 for her role in the critically acclaimed ‘Big Little Lies’.
In ‘Paradise’, Woodley plays a central character in a post-apocalyptic thriller. Her performance as Annie, a guarded survivor, intricately weaves into the story of Sterling K. Brown’s character, Agent Xavier Collins. Unfortunately, Annie faces a tragic end due to complications from childbirth, an aspect that Woodley approached with significant emotion.
Despite the grim fate of her character, Woodley remains hopeful for a potential return. “I’m always gunning for her to come back,” she commented. “While I’m not sure of the chances, I continue to pitch ideas to Dan Fogelman in the hopes that she will return.” This enthusiasm showcases her commitment to the role and connection with the storyline.
Reflecting on her character’s journey, Woodley was informed of Annie’s fate when she first took on the role. “I only read one episode initially. I spoke with Dan Fogelman about Annie’s trajectory, so I was aware of what was in store, even though I hadn’t read the entire script,” she explained.
Looking forward, the actress expressed excitement and curiosity regarding the developments in ‘Paradise’ season three. “I have no idea what to expect, and I prefer it that way. I want to experience the show as a fan,” she said, underlining her passion for the series.
