In a heartwarming yet distressing tale from New York City, a senior cat named Thai has been rescued after enduring nearly a week alone in her home following the tragic deaths of her owners. The feline was found in a desperate state but revealed a remarkable spirit, managed by the dedicated efforts of a local animal rescue organisation.

Thai, a 15-year-old cat, was left trapped inside her flat when her owners, Jeffrey Newman and Jayson Conner, passed away within days of each other. This unfortunate incident led to significant challenges for those who sought to aid both the animals left behind and the needs of the deceased estate.
According to a post by Big Apple Cats on social media, Thai’s two canine companions were taken in by animal control and have since been placed in a foster home. Sadly, the organisation revealed that when the New York Police Department arrived at the owners’ residence, they sealed the apartment despite being informed of Thai’s presence. Officers reportedly could not locate the frightened cat within the flat.

Fortunately, Thai’s cat sitter refused to abandon hope and turned to social media, sharing the cat’s alarming situation. This initiative garnered attention, prompting Big Apple Cats to take action. Kelly Mahoney, founder of the rescue group, expressed her determination to help, stating, “I knew time was of the essence and that persistence was the only way in.”
Despite initial attempts to gain permission from the NYPD to unseal the property, Mahoney faced challenges. Undeterred, she took her plea directly to the 34th Precinct, where one sergeant eventually agreed to reassess the situation. The officers returned to the flat on July 7, allowing Thai to be freed from her confinement.
A spokesperson for the NYPD confirmed to reporters that officers discovered a 58-year-old male unconscious in the apartment, who was later pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services. The cause of death is under investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Upon entering the flat, Mahoney recalled the emotional moment, stating, “We opened the door, expecting to find a dead cat or a very sick cat. Instead, we found Thai, screaming at the top of her lungs as if to say ‘Finally!’ She was terrified. Dirty. Desperate. But alive and strong.”
Once rescued, Thai received immediate care from Big Apple Cats, which provided food, medical attention, and a safe, comforting space. The cat is now in a foster-to-adopt home, indicating that her foster family intends to keep her permanently once she has settled into her new surroundings.
Mahoney fondly described Thai as “one of the sweetest and most gentle cats” and noted that despite her harrowing ordeal, the elderly feline appeared to be in relatively good condition. This resilience has shone a light on the importance of making plans for pets in case of unforeseen circumstances.
In light of this situation, Mahoney encourages pet owners to establish a clear plan for their animals. She emphasised the need to include pets in legal documents, to talk to friends and family about who would care for them if the owner passes unexpectedly, and to prevent situations where pets may become inadvertently trapped.
As Thai begins her new chapter, her story serves not only as a reminder of the strong bond between pets and their owners but also highlights the necessity for advance preparation to ensure their continued wellbeing. This remarkable cat has not only survived a week of loneliness but has also catalysed a conversation about responsible pet ownership amidst life’s uncertainties.
