Prince Harry has made his return to the UK as the countdown to the highly anticipated 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham begins. This week marks exactly one year until the games, which are set to take place at the National Exhibition Centre and Sandwell Aquatics Centre. To coincide with the occasion, a specially branded train highlighting the Invictus Games was unveiled on July 9 at Euston Station.

Collaboration between London Northwestern Railway and the Invictus Games Foundation led to the creation of this unique train, which aims to promote the upcoming games and celebrate the spirit of resilience among service personnel and veterans. The public was engaged in choosing a name for the train, and after a voting process, the name “The Spirit of Invictus” was selected. The name pays homage to the ethos of strength and determination that defines the Invictus Games.
JJ Chalmers, a broadcaster and an Invictus Games veteran himself, had the honour of revealing the train’s name to the crowd gathered at Euston. Chalmers, who competed in the inaugural Invictus Games back in 2014, expressed his sentiments about the event returning to the UK, describing it as “the closest to that 2014 feeling” he has experienced since the games began. He reflected on the pride that comes with bringing the Games back to its roots in a city where he has had personal connections, specifically due to his time spent recovering from injuries sustained during his service in Afghanistan.
Prince Harry also shared his personal connection to Birmingham, recalling the significant role the city played in his recovery process after he was wounded by an IED in 2011. He emphasised the remarkable care he received at a local hospital that became a beacon of hope during a challenging time of his life. He voiced excitement for the train’s role in celebrating the courageous individuals who embody the spirit of the Invictus Games, highlighting that it serves as more than just a mode of transport; it represents a physical manifestation of the community of veterans and their experiences.
Since its inception, the Invictus Games have been a platform for inspiring stories of recovery and resilience, having first been held in London in 2014. The upcoming games in Birmingham will mark a welcome return to the UK after a series of successful events held internationally, including locations like Orlando, Toronto, Sydney, and Düsseldorf.

In the days leading to the train’s unveiling, Prince Harry engaged with other activities; he attended the 14th Invictus Games Foundation Conversation at Chatham House in London on July 7. That day also witnessed a legal setback for him and several other high-profile individuals against Associated Newspapers Limited concerning allegations of unlawful information gathering.
On July 8, the Duke attended private meetings at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, an establishment dedicated to British Army veterans. Although his wife, Meghan Markle, was initially slated to accompany him during this part of the trip, plans changed due to security concerns, and she opted to remain in London with their two children.
Harry arrived in the UK after enjoying a vacation in Europe with his family.
