Kinslee Tschida was playing with her cousins when a storm began to develop. According to her grandfather, Chris Scheib, the family had begun to take precautionary measures as thunder rumbled in the distance. The children had already been warned to come inside when Kinslee’s uncle alerted them to the impending danger. However, the warning came too late.
Scheib, who was not present at the family home at the time, later recounted in an interview that tragedy struck just as Kinslee was getting off the swing set. “There was no warning, and there was no lightning,” he recalled. “It came right in between the tree.” Despite the proximity of another child, who was unharmed and standing nearby, Kinslee became the unfortunate victim of the circumstances.

In the moments following the strike, Tschida’s mother, a nurse, along with other family members, attempted to revive her using CPR before she was rushed to a nearby hospital. Sadly, medical efforts were unsuccessful, and Kinslee was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Describing the emotional toll of the incident, Scheib expressed his disbelief and sorrow, stating, “I never had to deal with this in my life until now, and it’s changed me. I think we’re all broken.” The family’s heartache is compounded by the suddenness of the event, leaving them to process the full impact of such a profound loss.
The LaSalle County Coroner’s Office has not yet released further information regarding the incident, and authorities have refrained from commenting on the matter as the community begins to come to terms with the tragedy. Kinslee’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief and support from the local community, with friends and family launching a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to assist with funeral expenses and medical bills.
The campaign, spearheaded by family friend Samantha Wallace, has described Kinslee as a “bright light” who was known for her infectious energy, love for singing and dancing, and her ability to brighten anyone’s day. Wallace fondly remembered Kinslee’s “loud, unforgettable laugh” and her smile, which had a unique way of lifting spirits even on the toughest days.
In her heartfelt tribute, Wallace noted, “She loved with a heart far bigger than her small frame, and anyone who had the privilege of knowing her was touched by her kindness, energy, and love.” The GoFundMe page has garnered significant attention, reflecting the deep sense of loss experienced by those who knew and loved Kinslee.
The heartbreaking circumstances surrounding Kinslee’s passing are a reminder of the unpredictable nature of severe weather and the tragic consequences it can bring. As the family mourns their loss, they also seek solace in the memories of Kinslee and the joy she brought to their lives. With their support network and the community rallying around them, the road to healing will be a difficult but necessary journey.
In the wake of such tragedies, it becomes increasingly important for families to be vigilant during stormy weather. The unfortunate fate of Kinslee Tschida serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the need for precautions, especially when children are involved.
As the family continues to grapple with the unimaginable loss, the community remains united in their support, honouring Kinslee’s memory while confronting the deep sadness of her absence.
