An 11-year-old boy from Pennsylvania is currently recovering at home after suffering a traumatic hand amputation due to an alligator attack while on a fishing trip. Brodie Dituri was injured on June 27 near Umatilla in Marion County, Florida. His father, Peter Dituri, has provided updates about his son’s condition and their journey following the incident.

The family had been enjoying their usual summer holiday in Florida, where they have made yearly trips for the past few years. According to Peter, fishing is a beloved pastime for Brodie. “He always asks to stop for a chance to cast a line whenever he sees water,” Peter recounted in an interview.
The unfortunate attack occurred when Brodie was putting a fish back into the water after reeling it in. Without warning, an 8-foot, 7-inch alligator struck, biting Brodie’s hand. In a desperate attempt to save his son, Peter leapt onto the alligator and tried to pry its jaws open. However, the animal rolled, resulting in the severe injury that ultimately led to the amputation of Brodie’s right hand at the wrist following multiple surgeries at a local hospital.
Describing the moment, Peter explained that his actions were purely instinctive, without time for thought. “The officers said that if I hadn’t gone on top of the alligator, it would have pulled him into the water before rolling,” he stated, expressing gratitude for the bystanders who helped call emergency services. “I can’t thank them enough for their assistance,” he added.
As Brodie continues to recover, he is exploring options for prosthetics, which his father indicated he is currently leaning towards. The emotional aftermath of the incident is also a significant concern; Brodie has expressed fear of returning to Florida in the foreseeable future.
