The much-anticipated nominations for the 2026 Emmy Awards are set to be revealed on Wednesday, July 8. However, fans of several popular television shows may find themselves disappointed, as a number of beloved series will not feature among this year’s contenders.

Among the notable absentees will be “Heated Rivalry” and “Dutton Ranch”. These shows, despite capturing audiences’ hearts and generating significant buzz, have been deemed ineligible for Emmy consideration due to various technical reasons linked to eligibility criteria.
In order for a television series to qualify for an Emmy nomination, it must meet certain standards. Primarily, it must either broadcast on traditional television or stream on a digital platform during the eligibility window, which in this case is from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026. Furthermore, a series must be produced by a distributor based in the United States.
“Heated Rivalry,” which has garnered widespread acclaim and vaulted its stars Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams to fame, falls short of these requirements. The show is a Canadian production, fully funded by Bell Media, the parent company of the Canadian streaming service Crave. Although it streamed in the United States on HBO Max, the series does not fulfil the necessary criteria as it lacks a co-production agreement with a U.S. partner prior to its production, thus rendering it ineligible under Emmy rules.
On the other hand, “Dutton Ranch,” part of the popular Yellowstone franchise created by Taylor Sheridan, is also unable to compete for an Emmy this year. The inaugural season of this Western drama, featuring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, was released in two parts. The initial four episodes debuted in May, with the remaining five airing weekly through June and July. This staggered release schedule has resulted in the series straddling two separate Emmys eligibility periods. Consequently, Paramount+ has opted to submit the entire series for the 2027 Emmy Awards.
The excitement for “Dutton Ranch” is not diminished, however, as the show has already been renewed for a second season, which could have implications for future nominations if it is released within the upcoming eligibility window.
In addition to “Heated Rivalry” and “Dutton Ranch,” several other series have also been ruled out for consideration this year. These include “The Vampire Lestat,” “SNL UK,” “Cape Fear,” “Elle,” and “House of the Dragon,” along with the season finale of “Widow’s Bay” and “Top Chef.”
As fans await the nomination announcement, there remains considerable intrigue regarding which series and performances will ultimately be recognised this year. The 2026 Emmy nominations will start to unfold at 11:30 a.m. ET, allowing viewers to discover which shows will be vying for the prestigious awards.
