His cousin, Liu, residing on the 20th floor, discovered him after hearing his wife’s frantic cries for help.
According to reports from local media, Liu had gone to check on Zhang’s family after noticing a neighbour’s window had been shattered by the incredible force of the winds. Upon knocking on the door, he was met with panic as Zhang’s wife informed him that her husband had fallen. Liu quickly rushed to search for him and found Zhang in a critical state, displaying only faint signs of life.
The injured man has since been admitted to intensive care and remains in a serious condition, as reported by several news outlets. The community is now coming to terms with the tragedy and the extensive damage inflicted by the tornado. More than 4,855 homes have suffered varying degrees of destruction, forcing many families to seek temporary shelter as recovery efforts begin.
Tornadoes are relatively rare occurrences in Hubei, with the last recorded instance taking place in May 2021.
