A concerning social media trend has emerged, posing serious risks to children as they experiment with microwaving popular squishy toys to enhance their pliability. This reckless behaviour has already resulted in severe burns and injuries, prompting urgent warnings from health experts and toy manufacturers alike.

The troubling phenomenon involves young users heating products like the widely enjoyed NeeDoh squishy cubes, despite explicit cautions against heating these items featured on their packaging. Reports indicate that the gel within these toys can overheat and burst, often leading to alarming injuries for children attempting to mimic the trend they have seen online.
Recent incidents have highlighted the dangers associated with this fad. A nine-year-old boy from Plainfield, Illinois, named Caleb Chabolla, suffered second-degree burns on his face and hands after igniting their personal experiment with the squishy toy. His mother, Whitney Grubb, explained that Caleb had learned about the idea from classmates, illustrating how these dangerous trends can proliferate quickly in school environments.
Paula Petersen, an advanced practice nurse at Loyola Medicine’s burn centre, raised concerns over the significant risks faced by young children who may not fully comprehend the potential consequences of their actions. She remarked, “Caleb is very lucky he didn’t sustain greater injuries. These trends can be extremely dangerous for young people who are less likely to consider or unable to understand the serious consequences.”
Furthermore, similar incidents have been reported in Floral Park, New York, where two young sisters, aged eight and four, suffered second- and third-degree burns after their own attempt to microwave the NeeDoh cubes. Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro spoke out about the unfortunate event, describing how the toy exploded upon removal from the microwave, covering the children in burning gel.
Uttaro emphasised the seriousness of the situation, stating, “When they removed it from the microwave, it exploded, and it oozed its gel on them.” His warning came alongside a blunt note that microwaving such toys is “a bad idea, very dangerous,” urging parents and caregivers to dissuade their children from engaging in this alarming trend.
In response to the wave of injuries associated with this activity, the parent company of NeeDoh, Schylling, has taken steps to address the misuse of its products. A representative from the company commented to PEOPLE, “Ensuring the safety of our consumers is fundamental for Schylling. We are disappointed to see there has been a trend on social media demonstrating misuse of our NeeDoh products.”
As part of their proactive measures, Schylling has collaborated with social media platforms like TikTok to remove content promoting the unsafe use of their toys. Additionally, safety warnings have been included on all packaging and e-commerce listings in an effort to clarify the dangers present in misusing their products.
Despite these preventative strategies, the trend continues to pose a significant threat to children, many of whom may not be readily accessing the safety information provided by manufacturers. Experts urge parents to initiate conversations about the dangers of following social media trends, particularly those that involve risky behaviours.
In a time when social media wields considerable influence over youth culture, the rise of dangerous trends such as microwaving squishy toys signifies the need for heightened awareness and vigilance. Parents, educators, and guardians are encouraged to remain informed and proactive in preventing children from engaging in potentially harmful activities that could leave lasting physical and emotional scars.
As the trend spreads, it highlights the broader issue of children’s vulnerability to peer pressure and online trends. Public health officials and toy manufacturers must continue to work hand-in-hand to safeguard the wellbeing of young consumers. The message remains clear: safety should always come first, and following fads without understanding the risks can lead to tragic consequences.
