A man from Braintree, Massachusetts, tragically succumbed to illness while attending a family wedding in India. Andrew Wasil, aged 39, was serving as best man at his brother’s wedding near Mumbai in February when he fell severely ill, his family revealed. His death was announced on June 19, following a harrowing battle with a dangerous strep infection.

Andrew’s sister, Erica Vinton, shared details of his condition through a GoFundMe campaign set up to cover medical expenses. She stated that her brother became critically unwell the day after the wedding. As his health deteriorated, he developed septic shock and required urgent medical intervention, which ultimately resulted in the amputation of both legs below the knees.

Following the amputations, Andrew was airlifted back to Boston for ongoing treatment. Having initially received intensive care in India for over six weeks, he returned home at the end of April to continue his recovery. Unfortunately, Andrew passed away at Brigham and Women’s Hospital after what was described as a brief illness.
Andrew’s obituary highlighted his dedication to his career; he had been a grocery manager at Stop & Shop since 2002. A proud graduate of Braintree High School in 2005, he also attended Massasoit Community College. Described as a vibrant individual, Andrew was known for his love of travel, sports, and enjoying time with friends.
His mother, Suzanne Wasil, noted that the infectious strep virus had spread to Andrew’s lungs, complicating his recovery. Tests also indicated that he had traces of other illnesses, including the common cold and flu, which exacerbated his condition. The family’s GoFundMe campaign successfully raised over $220,000, which covered the costs of his air ambulance and medical treatment, reflecting the community’s profound support during their challenging time.
Expressing her gratitude, Suzanne Wasil remarked on the overwhelming kindness shown towards her son during his illness. “We have no words except thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” she said, emphasizing Andrew’s loyalty and generosity. He was a beloved figure in the family, particularly adored by his nieces and nephew.
A funeral service for Andrew was held on June 26, allowing friends and family to honour his memory and contributions to their lives. As the community mourns the loss of such a vibrant soul, many have taken to social media to share tributes, recounting memories of his spirit and kindness.
Despite the despair surrounding his illness and untimely passing, the outpouring of support from the community speaks volumes about the impact he had on those around him. Updates from family have highlighted not only the emotional toll of his journey but also a celebration of the love and connections he fostered throughout his life.
The tragic story of Andrew Wasil serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the power of community support during difficult times. As the family navigates their grief, they continue to reflect on Andrew’s legacy of kindness and friendship, ensuring that his memory will not be forgotten.
