Speaking on the Zach Sang Show podcast, the 46-year-old actress delved into how this iconic look came to be, revealing that it was a rather serendipitous choice.

Deschanel, who is well-known for her roles in various productions including New Girl, disclosed that her bright blonde hair was not initially intended for her part in Elf. Instead, the change stemmed from an earlier screen test for a different film that ultimately never materialised. “It was totally random,” she remarked during the podcast episode, drawing chuckles from the host and listeners alike.

The actress explained that the aborted project was intended to be a story about a pop star reminiscent of Britney Spears. Deschanel fondly recalled the experience, sharing how the film’s creators wanted her to embody the image of a pop star. To achieve this, they dyed her naturally dark brown hair blonde, added extensions, and even gave her a tan to complete the transformation. “I did look as much like a pop star as I can. But then the movie never happened,” she recalled with a touch of nostalgia.

Shortly after this transformation, Deschanel auditioned for Elf. Due to the intensive process involved in altering her hair, she chose to maintain the blonde look. When she was cast in the film, she inquired whether she could revert her hair back to its original colour. Unfortunately, the powers that be insisted she retain her look from the audition. Thus, Deschanel’s character Jovie in Elf was immortalised with her blonde hair.

Elf, which was released in 2003, depicts the story of Buddy, a human raised by Santa’s elves, played by Will Ferrell. Seeking his biological father in New York City, Buddy encounters Jovie, portrayed by Deschanel. In a previous interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Deschanel discussed her audition experience for Elf, which occurred when she was just 21 years old. She recalled that Jon Favreau, the film’s director, initially informed her that the role had already been offered to Katie Holmes. However, he invited her to sit down and chat, which turned out to be a fortunate twist of fate. “What was great about that was, I wasn’t nervous,” Deschanel remarked, highlighting how her perceived lack of opportunity eased her anxiety.

As luck would have it, Holmes subsequently withdrew from the film due to a scheduling conflict, opening the door for Deschanel to take on the role of Jovie. “And then they were like, ‘Who should we have?’” she recounted, suggesting that the character was adaptable to the actress who played her. The casting directors were already aware of Deschanel’s musical talents, as she had been involved in a cabaret act, making her a fitting choice for the character.
