In an unexpected twist of fate, Christopher Rich, a 34-year-old real estate agent from Atlanta, has purchased a Marvel movie subway car for $5,000. Rich plans to transform this unique acquisition into a themed Airbnb, offering guests a memorable stay in a piece of cinematic history.

Rich’s journey began at a rare warehouse sale conducted by Marvel Studios, which was clearing out props from their Atlanta-based productions before shifting much of their filming operations to London. Among the various items on sale, a subway car, featured in productions such as *Hawkeye* and *Agatha All Along*, caught Rich’s eye. “It was love at first sight,” he recounted, admitting he was thrilled to see the subway car still available.

Initially, the subway car was listed at $10,000, but with a sale discount of 25%, Rich seized the moment to negotiate the price down to $5,000. He consulted his brother before finalising the purchase, confirming for himself that he wasn’t being overly impulsive. The prospect of owning such a rare item, he thought, was simply too enticing to pass up.
The ambitious idea for the subway car, however, was more than just a novelty purchase. Rich envisioned turning it into an Airbnb where guests could experience the thrill of sleeping in a subway car that has played a role in authentic Marvel productions. He aimed to create an experience that blended the nostalgic vibe of riding New York City’s subway with playful nods to Marvel lore.
Rich acquired the subway car on November 2, 2022, but the renovation process has been lengthy and sporadic due to various life commitments. However, progress has recently accelerated, with construction ramping up in anticipation of the completed project. Workers have completed laying the concrete foundation, and plans are in motion to relocate the subway car from Rich’s driveway to its permanent site. Rich aims to welcome guests to the unique Airbnb by October.
The design of the Airbnb aims to honour both subway culture and Marvel’s cinematic legacy. Rich plans to restore three original subway seats used by characters Hawkeye and Kate Bishop, aligning their colour scheme with the style prevalent in the films. One of the highlights for guests will be the doorbell, which will announce, “Stand clear of the closing doors, please!” giving the experience an extra touch of authenticity.
While the project is estimated to cost between $100,000 and $125,000 by the time it’s finished, Rich remains undeterred. He believes the final result will provide an unforgettable experience that is worth the investment. “So much of what happens in Hollywood happens inside studios where the public never gets to go behind the scenes,” he noted, emphasising the rarity of such an opportunity for fans.
Despite Rich’s excitement, the process has not been without its challenges. After parking the subway car in his driveway while waiting for appropriate permits, he faced a legal investigation from the local authorities. Rich has attended court on two occasions due to complaints from a neighbour. However, he reports that officials were accommodating, focused on ensuring compliance rather than imposing fines.
Rich’s unexpected purchase gained viral attention when a bystander filmed the subway car in his driveway. The video circulated widely online, reaching an Instagram account with over 1.2 million followers. “I had no idea this happened until months later,” Rich said, reflecting on the unexpected popularity of his unusual project.
Online reactions have been largely positive, with many praising Rich for his innovative concept. However, not all commentary has been supportive. Some train enthusiasts have debated the subway car’s origin, questioning its authenticity and suggesting it may be a modified portion of a different car type.
Rich’s project not only showcases his creativity but also resonates with many who share his enthusiasm for trains and superhero culture. He envisions the Airbnb becoming a sought-after destination for families and fans alike, allowing them to create lasting memories. “If adults and kids alike leave smiling, that’s a huge win,” he stated.
Ultimately, Christopher Rich’s venture transcends the typical home renovation. It reflects a broader human desire to connect, dream, and engage with the magic of storytelling, promising an imaginative escape for all who step inside the Marvelous Subway.
