In February 2025, while on a family ski trip in Durango, Colorado, Stuart’s seemingly innocuous back pain escalated into a terrifying health crisis that would change the course of his life.

Stuart’s wife, Sarah Campion, 38, an operations manager in finance, initially thought Stuart’s discomfort was simply due to muscle strain from skiing. However, as his condition worsened, leading to severe coughing and fatigue, Sarah quickly realised the urgency of the situation when he collapsed just before they were due to leave for the airport. “He was white as a ghost, sweating profusely and struggling to breathe,” she recalled. Immediate medical attention was sought, and what followed was a shocking diagnosis: Stuart was experiencing a heart attack.
Despite the shocking nature of the event, Stuart’s relatively young age was a critical factor that contributed to his survival. Doctors at the hospital indicated that if he had been ten years older, he might not have made it through such a severe heart attack. Following surgery, Stuart was placed in a medically induced coma and spent five exhausting days in the ICU before being transferred to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, where he began to stabilise.
However, complications arose, and just three days later, Stuart went into cardiac arrest again. He was placed on an ECMO machine, which provides cardiac and respiratory support, for two weeks. His cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Katharina Fetten, later described Stuart’s situation as incredibly dire. “Without mechanical support, the chance of his survival was virtually nil,” she stated.
Amidst this turmoil, Sarah learned she was pregnant on the very day Stuart came off the ECMO machine. She opted not to reveal the news immediately, fearing it might overwhelm him. Eventually, she shared the joyful news when he was able to stand. Expecting their daughter in October 2025 provided both Stuart and Sarah with renewed motivation and hope during Stuart’s challenging recovery.
On April 8, 2025, Stuart underwent surgery to implant an Abbott HeartMate 3 Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), a mechanical pump designed to assist patients with advanced heart failure. While many view the LVAD as a temporary measure awaiting a transplant, Stuart and his doctors decided it was the best option at that moment, given the potential challenges of a new transplant with a newborn in the house.
“I wanted to give myself the best chance to be there for my daughter,” he explained. “I’m looking to bank as much life as possible.” The LVAD offers a lifespan of up to ten years, which allows Stuart to focus on being a dedicated father.
After spending 81 days in the hospital, Stuart was discharged and began outpatient physical therapy to regain the strength he had lost. His determination was evident as he expressed his desire to be a hands-on dad, eager to participate in everyday activities such as changing diapers and pushing the stroller to the park.
When their daughter Vivvi was born in October 2025, Stuart embraced fatherhood with enthusiasm. “Holding my daughter was incredible,” he said. Sarah remarked on Vivvi’s resilience, attributing her health to their unwavering commitment during a challenging time. Stuart put in the work at home, taking charge of diaper changes and ensuring he was available for every moment, cherishing his time with his newborn.
As the family adjusted to their new life, Stuart felt blessed to be present for Vivvi, ensuring he shared in her upbringing. He spends part of the week caring for her while also managing his recovery, which remains a priority in his life after his heart ordeal.
