A college student in Silver Spring, Maryland, has embarked on a heartfelt campaign to revive her grandmother’s restaurant, La Posada, which has been an integral part of the community for over two decades. Struggling to attract customers amid a decline in business, the student is leveraging social media to increase visibility and foot traffic before she returns to university.

In an emotional Instagram Reel shared on 5 July, the student outlined her mission to support La Posada, a family-run eatery that serves Salvadoran and Mexican cuisine. “I have 60 days to help save my grandma’s restaurant before I go back to college,” she states, underscoring the urgency of her initiative. The video highlights not only the eatery but also her grandmother, a resilient single mother and grandmother, who has run the restaurant largely on her own.

The student reflects on the restaurant’s past, recalling how it once bustled with customers who flocked to savour her grandmother’s signature dishes, such as pupusas and tacos. “Not too long ago, the restaurant was packed. People would come from all over for her pupusas, tacos and homemade food,” she narrates, contrasting those fond memories with the current reality of dwindling patronage. “But over time, business slowed down. Not because the food got worse, I promise you that’s definitely not the problem. I think people just forgot this place existed,” she emphasises.
With a heartfelt aim to return the restaurant to its former glory, the student stressed that her grandmother had not asked her to create the video; rather, she felt compelled to act out of gratitude. “After everything she’s done for our family, I really wanted to do something special for her,” she explains. As part of her plan, she encourages viewers to visit the restaurant and share their experiences on social media.
The response to her video has been overwhelmingly positive, with numerous commenters expressing their enthusiasm and pledging to support the restaurant. “LET’S GET GRANDMA’S RESTAURANT BUSY AGAIN ❤️🙌,” wrote one supporter, while another excitedly mentioned plans to visit for lunch. Enthusiastic endorsements poured in, with fans praising the delicious food, highlighting the quality of the pupusas, and even attributing some of the decline in business to local construction work affecting access to the restaurant.
As her urgent plea gains traction online, the student remains committed to her goal of revitalising La Posada. She is one of many in a growing trend of small businesses turning to online platforms for assistance during challenging times. This approach has seen numerous restaurants successfully regain patronage and support from their communities, including Cielito Lindo—a historic taquito stand in Los Angeles that recently reopened after overcoming financial hardship partly through public donations.
Cielito Lindo, which has been operational since 1934, faced adversity during the COVID-19 pandemic, culminating in its temporary closure in May 2026. The restaurant appealed to its audience on social media, detailing its struggles and the need for funds to cover electrical repairs, rent arrears, and other expenses. Thanks to the generosity of the community, the establishment received over $53,000 in donations, which allowed it to reopen on 24 June.
“Thank you for your patience, your support, and for welcoming us back,” the restaurant stated on its Facebook page amidst the outpouring of community love. Their story echoes that of many small businesses navigating financial constraints yet maintaining a deep connection to their historical roots and clientele.
Back in Silver Spring, the college student’s initiative continues to gain momentum, drawing attention to La Posada and its rich culinary heritage. She remains optimistic about her grandmother’s restaurant, inviting both locals and visitors to rediscover this hidden gem of the community, with the hope that her efforts will not only increase patronage but also re-establish the restaurant as a cherished gathering place for friends and families alike.
As the student embarks on this personal mission, her social media campaign not only serves to support her grandmother’s restaurant but also echoes a broader theme of resilience found within family-run establishments facing modern challenges. Through her heartfelt advocacy, the young woman embodies the spirit of community support that is vital for the survival and thriving of small businesses in changing times.
