In an unusual incident, more than 6,500 customers in Virginia experienced a power outage, which was attributed to a snake that slithered its way into a Dominion Energy substation. The outage, which lasted just over two hours, occurred shortly after midnight on July 1, affecting residents across the Shenandoah Valley.

A spokesperson for Dominion Energy, Craig Carper, explained that the snake made contact with essential machinery within the substation, triggering an automatic safety shutdown. This measure is designed to protect the electrical system from potential damage and prevent widespread outages.

While wildlife encounters with electrical equipment are not unprecedented, such incidents are generally rare and seldom lead to significant disruptions. Carper pointed out that various animals, including snakes, squirrels, and birds, sometimes inadvertently cause issues when they come into contact with electrical infrastructure. “Some of our wildlife friends don’t quite realise what they’re getting into,” he remarked.
The outage lasted approximately two hours and fifteen minutes, during which time Dominion Energy’s protective systems effectively worked to contain the situation. Carper assured that the automatic shutdown had a mitigating effect on the potential damage inflicted, labelling any harm sustained as minor. He noted that had these safety precautions not been in place, the repercussions on the electrical grid could have been far more severe.
This recent incident was not an isolated event, as there have been previous occurrences of power outages caused by animals. In 2024, for instance, another snake managed to enter a high-voltage area at a substation in Newport News, momentarily severing power to over 11,000 customers before manual repairs were completed.
To combat these incidents, Dominion Energy has implemented protective measures around their substations aimed at deterring wildlife. However, experts acknowledge that it is nearly impossible to completely prevent wildlife from wandering into these controlled environments. Animals are often drawn to such facilities out of curiosity or in search of shelter, creating unpredictable challenges for utility companies.
As odd as it may seem, the presence of wildlife continues to be a topic of concern for energy providers. Efforts are being made to find solutions that will reduce the risk of outages while ensuring the safety of both animals and the electrical infrastructure.
