An Oklahoma mother has emerged as a symbol of bravery after suffering severe injuries in a fireworks accident while trying to protect her young daughter. Jessica Kies, a resident of Tuttle, has recounted how her quick instincts saved her child’s life at the cost of two of her own fingers.

The incident occurred on June 19, just a couple of weeks before the Fourth of July holidays, when Kies noticed her seven-year-old daughter holding a Roman candle. As she grabbed the firework away from her child, it malfunctioned and exploded, causing significant injuries to her hand. In a recent interview, Kies detailed the horrifying moment: “It pretty much blew up this whole side of my hand. I lost my pinky and my ring finger, and you can see that my middle finger is still really swollen,” she explained during a conversation with local news outlet NBC KFOR.
The explosion resulted in more than just the amputation of her fingers. Kies also sustained burns on various parts of her body and required urgent medical attention. Subsequently, she was admitted to the trauma unit for 24 hours, during which time a hand surgeon evaluated her injuries. Multiple surgeries would follow, including a skin graft, as she began the arduous journey toward recovery.
Kies, who works as a hairstylist, now faces new challenges in her daily life post-accident. She has expressed her concerns about performing everyday tasks—particularly activities such as braiding her daughter’s hair, which she previously accomplished with ease. “I was upset the other day because I’m going to have to figure out how to braid [my daughter’s] hair because I use those two fingers to do that, but I’ll get through it. It’s just going to be a learning curve and just take it a day at a time,” she shared with KFOR.
Despite her own suffering, Kies remains steadfastly grateful that she was the one injured and not her daughter. “I’m very grateful it happened to me. I will take it all day so she doesn’t have to deal with that,” she told CBS affiliate KWTV.
