The Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the distress call at Campgrounds-R-Us in Owosso Township shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday, 2 July. As reported by local news outlet The Argus-Press, witnesses observed the father and son shouting for help, prompting one camper on the opposite shore to leap into the lake in an attempt to assist.

According to Shiawassee County Detective Lieutenant Keith Hansen, the camper managed to rescue the boy but could not locate Mr Malone. It was reported that the pair were attempting to swim approximately 500 feet from the east beach to the other side of the man-made lake, a considerable distance for inexperienced swimmers.

First responders and volunteers quickly joined the search for Mr Malone, employing various means including a small boat, a kayak, and a rope. The determination of around eight searchers led to Mr Malone being retrieved about an hour after the emergency was reported, approximately 50 feet from the shore on the western side of the lake.
Rescue teams provided urgent medical attention to Mr Malone for around 20 minutes before he was transported to Memorial Healthcare hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities preliminary investigations suggested that Mr Malone and his son were not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. It was also noted that Mr Malone had allegedly ventured outside the designated safe swimming area of the lake, leading to concerns over safety regulations in the region.
Local police indicated that alcohol or drugs did not appear to be contributing factors in this heartbreaking scenario. As the community grapples with the shock of this tragic event, family and friends of Mr Malone have stepped forward to express their grief and support.
In the aftermath, loved ones established a fundraising initiative on SupportNow to assist Mr Malone’s wife, Tabatha, and their children with funeral costs. Supporters described Mr Malone as a “devoted husband and father” who had significantly changed his life for the better in recent years. They highlighted his kindness, caring nature, and willingness to help others, asserting that his family was his utmost priority.
Authorities have not released further details about the incident, with inquiries ongoing. The response teams from the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office, Owosso Police Department, and Michigan State Police all contributed to the rescue efforts, underscoring the community’s commitment to aiding in emergency situations.
Tragedies such as this serve as a reminder of the potential dangers inherent in swimming, particularly in non-designated areas. As investigations continue, residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines while engaging in recreational activities in local lakes and waterways.
