A recent incident in New York City saw a seaplane crash into the East River, leaving a teenage girl and her grandmother fearing for their lives. Sixteen-year-old Khloe Todd recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the crash, where she and her 76-year-old grandmother, Ada Todd, faced what they believed was impending doom.
On Sunday, 5th July, a small seaplane carrying eight individuals experienced a “hard landing” in the East River, as confirmed by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). The Kodiak 100, identified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), was making its way back from the Hamptons, where the duo had been celebrating the birthday of a friend of Ada’s.
Khloe revealed her genuine panic during the incident in an interview with CBS Mornings. “I thought we weren’t going to make it,” she stated, recalling her view from the aircraft’s window, which was nothing but water. To stabilise the plane, she and the other passengers were instructed to lean to the right moments before impact.
The aircraft crashed near the Skyport terminal situated on East 23rd Street and Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive. Despite the distressing situation, emergency services rapidly responded and managed to rescue all eight passengers from the wreckage. Among them, two individuals sustained minor injuries.
As the plane descended towards the water, Khloe documented the moment on her phone, capturing the pilot’s desperate “Mayday” calls. Amid the chaos, she found herself asking, “What the hell is happening? Am I going to be okay? Is my grandma going to be okay?”
In a twist of fate, Khloe’s father called just as the crash unfolded. “I picked up and I was like, ‘Can I call you back? The plane kind of just crashed,’” she recalled. Despite the turmoil, she managed to stay on the line with him while ensuring her grandmother’s safety, highlighting her priority in that frightening moment.
Footage from the scene, shared by NBC 4 New York, depicted the seaplane tilted to one side as it remained afloat in the water. A nearby witness, Marcus Hurlburt, described the unfolding events to The New York Times, stating that he had been jogging along the East River when he observed the plane skimming the water with its left wing. He commended the pilot, saying, “The pilot did a great job on making sure it didn’t turn over.”
Emergency response teams, including police and fire department boats, arrived within minutes, providing immediate assistance to the stranded passengers. The community has praised their swift action, which undoubtedly played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of those onboard.
