An 11-year-old girl, identified as Dora Belen Rivera, remains in a stable condition in hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head while sitting in a car outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Hallandale Beach, Florida. The incident occurred on June 27, when she and her father, Oscar Roman Miron, were caught in a shooting that targeted innocent bystanders.

Details surrounding the tragic occurrence have been revealed through a GoFundMe campaign set up to support the family. According to a statement from Reyna Mateo, a co-worker of Miron, the family had just arrived at the fast-food outlet when Miron stayed in the vehicle with their three children while his wife went inside to collect their order. An unprovoked argument erupted between other individuals in the parking lot, leading to the sudden outbreak of gunfire.

The gunfire struck both Miron and Rivera, with the young girl suffering a severe injury as a bullet became lodged in her head. Miron was hit in the hip but has since been treated and discharged from the hospital. Fortunately, Rivera’s two younger siblings, aged 2 and 5, who were also in the vehicle at the time, escaped without physical harm, although they were witnesses to the horror unfolding around them.

As of the latest updates, Rivera has undergone surgery but remains hospitalised as doctors have deemed it unsafe to remove the bullet from her head. The GoFundMe stated, “Doctors have advised the family that they are not removing the bullet at this time because doing so could cause even greater harm.” Despite the severity of her injury, she is currently receiving specialised medical care and is facing a difficult road ahead in her recovery process.
The authorities have arrested 18-year-old Ralph N-Kosi Blue III, who was reportedly arriving for his shift at the McDonald’s at the time of the shooting. He was charged with multiple counts, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. Blue is currently incarcerated at the Broward County Jail without bond and has been confirmed to no longer be employed by the fast-food chain.
The police have characterised the Rivera family as completely innocent victims caught in a chaotic and dangerous scenario. The GoFundMe campaign clearly states that Oscar Miron and his family had no involvement in the altercation that led to the gunfire, highlighting the random nature of the incident that has turned their lives upside down.
The community has rallied to support the family during this trying time. Donations are being raised through the crowdfunding platform to help mitigate medical costs and other expenses that may arise as they navigate this challenging period. The family’s plight resonates deeply within the local community, and many are expressing their outrage at such a senseless act of violence.
While the restaurant chain has not yet commented on the specifics of the incident, the gravity of the situation has raised concerns about public safety in the area. The shooting serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of unexpected violence erupting in everyday settings, affecting those who least expect to be involved in such incidents.
As Dora Belen Rivera continues her fight for recovery, the hope is that her story will inspire needed conversations about safety and violence in communities. The impact of this distressing event will linger not only for the Rivera family but also for the wider Hallandale Beach community, urging everyone to reflect on the responsibility of maintaining peace and safety in public spaces.
