Steve Shields, the victim’s son, shared his heartbreak with NBC Los Angeles shortly after the incident. He described his mother as a dedicated family member whose greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. “She just did not want to miss a single moment,” he stated, reflecting on his mother’s love for family connections. “She wanted to include them in everything, and that was her joy.”

Ginny Shields was known for her passion for art, particularly art history. For over two decades, she volunteered at the Getty Villa in Malibu, showcasing her commitment to community service and her love for the arts. “She had a lot of years left and a lot of things left to do,” Steve lamented, emphasising the significant loss to the family.
The fateful day began like many others, with Ginny running errands. Her son expressed his anguish, saying, “I’m imagining my mum there under that car, and I wish I could unsee it. She’s left a giant hole that can’t be filled.” The emotional weight of the tragedy has left the family grappling with grief and searching for answers.
According to the Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD), the fatal incident happened around 2:30 p.m. local time. The driver, identified as 65-year-old Nolvia Buezo from Thousand Oaks, was behind the wheel of the white Tesla with four juveniles as passengers. Police reported that Buezo was navigating through the Target parking lot when she attempted to make a right turn onto Madera Road. However, she failed to complete the turn, causing the vehicle to veer onto the sidewalk and strike Ginny before crashing into the building.
Emergency responders discovered Ginny trapped beneath the vehicle upon arrival. Police Sergeant Rick Morton provided details about the situation, noting that an investigation is underway to determine the specifics surrounding the crash. “We’re still trying to ascertain the cause, whether it was speed, operator error, or if there was a malfunction with the Tesla,” he said.
Buezo was transported to a nearby hospital after experiencing pain in her wrist and arm; one juvenile passenger was also taken to the hospital as a precaution due to minor abrasions. The other three juveniles were released to family members who were present at the scene.
At this stage of the investigation, authorities do not suspect that Buezo was impaired during the accident, and no arrests have been made as of yet. The SVPD continues to gather information and evidence to gain clarity on how this tragic event occurred.
Steve Shields has called for answers regarding the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death. “We obviously need answers and are looking forward to finding out what happened, how this could happen,” he told news outlets. The family wishes for a deeper understanding and closure as they navigate their grief. “Mom… we wish we had more time with you,” he added, poignantly articulating the overwhelming sense of loss felt by those left behind.
The heartbreaking incident has raised questions about vehicle safety, particularly concerning autonomous driving technology. As investigations continue, the family hopes that further clarity can be achieved regarding the crash and its causes. Ginny Shields’ legacy as a loving mother and grandmother serves as a reminder of the impact one individual can have on their family and community, even in the face of tragedy.
