Celina Sengendo, a 31-year-old mother from Houston, has turned a childhood dream into reality by purchasing a property in Sicily through Italy’s innovative one-euro housing scheme. This aspiration, rooted in her past experiences, exemplifies her commitment to creating a legacy for her family while developing her international property portfolio.

Sengendo’s journey towards property ownership ignited during her formative years when she witnessed her parents constructing a lakeside home in Uganda. This endeavour took years to complete, yet the sight of her parents’ dedication and commitment resonated deeply with her. “Just watching the process of that inspired me to become an international property owner,” Sengendo shared. The memory of this experience lingered even as life progressed, transforming her dream into long-term ambition.

Initially, the idea of owning property overseas felt more like a fanciful aspiration than a tangible goal. However, a serendipitous encounter with an article on Italy’s one-euro housing programme reignited her interest. This initiative, which allows individuals to purchase properties in rural areas for only one euro, seemed almost too optimistic to be true. Yet, at that moment, Sengendo was not in a position to act on the opportunity; pressing life commitments and financial constraints meant that her ambition was placed on the back burner.
A turning point came when Sengendo stumbled upon a YouTube video showcasing the renovation of a similarly priced Italian home. The footage reignited her long-dormant ambition and reminded her that such opportunities were still available. “I was so relieved to see that the one-euro houses still existed,” she recounted. Encouraged by the possibilities, she finally took the plunge and purchased her property for a mere $1.16.
With the birth of her son, the motivation for Sengendo’s property goals evolved. Prior to motherhood, property ownership was primarily a personal aspiration. Now, her ambitions were reshaped by the responsibility of securing a future for her child. “Because I have a toddler, I want to grow my assets for him, God forbid before it’s too late,” she stated, highlighting the shift in her perspective.
The Sicilian home represents more than just a renovation project; it signifies a chance to build a future that will offer opportunities for her family. Sengendo views her one-euro purchase as merely the first move towards a larger goal. “My ultimate aim is to have my own Italian villa with a vineyard, olive trees, a pool, and the works,” she expressed, emphasising her vision of a picturesque future.
In addition to serving as a family retreat, Sengendo plans to utilise the one-euro property as a business venture that could provide financial support for her dream villa. She envisions creating a holiday home that could also benefit the local community, intertwining both personal and entrepreneurial goals. Her videos tracking her renovation journey demonstrate her intent to explore business avenues that not only enhance her project but also contribute to the local economy.
Despite the ambitious nature of her plan, Sengendo is upfront about the challenges that accompany such a significant undertaking. Reflecting on her family’s journey, she credited her father, who has built a successful lakeside property in Uganda, for instilling the values of hard work and perseverance. “It might sound like we’re rich, but we are NOT,” she quipped, underscoring the reality that creating something meaningful necessitates considerable time and effort.
While expressing her passion for property development, Sengendo recalled a recent visit to Sicily where an abandoned villa caught her eye near her new home. Rather than viewing it as a dilapidated structure, she visualised its potential and the possibilities for renovation. “I was terrified to go inside because I was alone, but I can’t stop thinking about it,” she admitted, revealing her determination to explore and possibly transform it in the future.
Sengendo’s journey is reminiscent of her childhood experiences, where she watched her parents turn their aspirations into reality. Today, she embarks on her own adventure, guided by the same principles of determination and family legacy. Her story illustrates how deeply rooted aspirations coupled with newfound responsibilities can drive individuals toward fulfilling their dreams, one step at a time.
