In the aftermath of catastrophic flooding in Central Texas on July 4, 2025, a young man faced the harrowing reality of losing both of his parents. James Evan Rushing, now 25, was determined to locate his mother and father after they mysteriously disappeared during the deluge that laid waste to Kerr County. Their remains were eventually discovered just one day after what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary.

Evan remembers the gut-wrenching moment when he understood that his parents, James Randall “J.R.” Rushing, aged 62, and Cynthia Cherise “Cindy” Rushing, aged 53, had perished together. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt a pain like that in my entire life,” he reflected. Despite the profound grief, Evan found solace in the knowledge that his parents were together during their final moments.
In the year following their tragic deaths, Evan and his four siblings bonded as they navigated a collective sorrow, sorting through their parents’ affairs while coming to terms with a loss that felt impossibly premature. “Initially, it was really tough because none of us knew what to do at all,” said Evan, recalling the haunting visit to their family home, filled with memories as though his parents had just stepped out for a moment.

Evan, a Navy construction combat engineer, initially attempted to reach his parents by texting their phones, unaware they had been reassigned to new users. In the absence of direct contact, he found comfort in holding onto his mother’s old Bible, which contained personal notes. “Every day, I try to just be the best at everything that I do because that’s what they would always preach to me,” he stated. Cindy’s favourite biblical passage, Matthew 5:14, inspired him as he highlighted her words, “You are the light of the world.”
The Rushing family had deep roots in Sulphur Springs, Texas, where they fostered a blended household rich in faith and understanding. J.R., a Navy veteran, and Cindy, who dedicated her life to home healthcare, married shortly after they met in 1996. Following J.R.’s medical retirement from the Navy, he pursued further education and established a career in oil distribution. Cindy, a devoted mother to two children from a previous marriage, later obtained two master’s degrees as she balanced motherhood with her professional life.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Evan shared how his parents’ unwavering support, even during financially challenging times, instilled values in him. “Even when they didn’t have much money, they sacrificed a lot to put us through sports or things like that,” he remarked, cementing the importance of their “good childhood” in shaping him and his siblings. He described their parental partnership as a “blueprint” for his own marriage, attesting to their unity in overcoming adversity.
Not long before the floods struck, the Rushing family was full of anticipation. Evan had recently married his wife Nadiana in an intimate ceremony in Gettysburg on July 1, 2025. Just days later, his parents planned a trip to Kerrville, Texas, in celebration of their upcoming anniversary. “They were really excited,” Evan recalled, blissfully unaware of the tragedy that awaited.
The initial alarm bells rang when Evan received a message from his sister inquiring about their parents’ whereabouts. His growing concern only intensified upon seeing social media posts seeking information about his mother and father. Later that day, as news about the flooding spread and casualties rose, it became apparent to Evan that he needed to act quickly. He arranged to track down his parents’ last known location while preparing to travel to Texas himself.
Tragically, those plans were swiftly dismantled when Evan was met at the airport by his siblings, who bore the devastating news that state troopers had confirmed their parents did not survive the floods. “I just remember them coming up looking defeated,” he recounted. Having to deliver the heartbreaking news to their grandmother is a moment etched into his memory, reflecting the deep shock that reverberated through their family.
In the wake of their parents’ untimely passing, Evan and his siblings confronted a flurry of responsibilities, including organising their parents’ funeral and addressing the complications arising from their lack of a will. “As the first couple of weeks passed, it settled in,” Evan said. “We knew what the reality was.”
Today, Evan and his family are focused on moving forward while cherishing the memory of their parents. He has found comfort in caring for their dog, a Mini Aussie named Gypsy, and in small rituals that honour his parents’ legacy. On his father’s birthday, he poured a shot of whiskey, one of J.R.’s favourite indulgences, and paused in reflection.
“I do small, little things every day,” Evan shared, as he continues to navigate life with the cherished memories of his family close at heart. The experience has underscored the importance of resilience and togetherness, both of which will guide him as he carries his parents’ spirit with him.
