A New Jersey family is in mourning following the tragic drowning of their three-year-old son, Elijah “Eli” Stephen, in their backyard pool on June 27. The heart-wrenching incident occurred in Washington Township, prompting an outpouring of grief and support from the local community.

Eli’s father, Mike Stephen, a police officer, and his mother, Sandi Shevlin, an educator, were at home when the accident unfolded. In a poignant social media post, Mike recounted the harrowing moment when he and Sandi realised something was wrong. They had found their daughter Ella standing in the kitchen, wet and wearing a pull-up, who had casually mentioned the pool. With an open back door leading to the yard, Mike’s instincts drove him to sprint towards the pool, and what he discovered was a nightmare for any parent to face.

Upon reaching the pool, Mike found Eli face down in the water. Sandi immediately called for emergency services while Mike performed CPR on his son until help arrived. Despite the efforts of medical professionals to revive him — initially getting a heartbeat back — the swelling in Eli’s brain proved fatal, and he ultimately could not be saved.

In the wake of this devastating loss, father Mike expressed his anguish, stating, “The images will forever be burned into my mind. I wasn’t fast enough. I’ll spend the rest of my days wondering what could have been.” His fatherly love shines through as he professes to remember his son’s gentle spirit while grappling with the thought of what Eli could have achieved had he been given more time.
Sandi shared her own heartbreak on social media, expressing regret and sorrow at her inability to protect her son. “My sweet and beautiful boy, I’m so sorry I failed you,” she posted, showcasing the profound pain that accompanies the loss of a child.
In a move that speaks to the compassionate nature of the family, Mike and Sandi have opted to donate Eli’s organs. Mike reflected on this decision, noting that if it could help prevent another parent from experiencing such a tragedy, it would be worth it. “Elijah would want that as well,” he said.
The local community has rallied to support the Stephens during this harrowing time. Washington Township community Council President, Peter Del Borrello III, highlighted the collective grief felt by the community, stating: “When one family hurts, we all hurt. Today, Mike and Sandi need that love and support more than ever.”
To assist with the family’s needs, a GoFundMe campaign has been established by Eli’s aunt, Brittnie Hutchinson. This initiative aims to provide financial support to the family as they navigate their new reality after the loss. According to Hutchinson, the funds raised will also assist Mike and Sandi in affording therapy and specialised assistance for Eli’s siblings, Ella and Mickey.
In a heartfelt message on social media, Mike Stephen advised others to cherish their time with their children. “Don’t ever take it for granted. Hug your babies. Hug them longer, hug them tighter.” He cautioned that one may never know when it might be the last chance to do so.
The grief-stricken family, bereft of their young son’s radiant smile and infectious joy, is bracing themselves for the journey of healing ahead. They are joined by an entire community that stands ready to support them in the face of this unimaginable loss.
