A married couple has tragically lost their lives in a three-vehicle collision in Nevada, identified by friends and family as Sergio and Jennifer Villanueva. The accident, which occurred on Sunday, June 28, around 7:21 a.m. local time, took place near the intersection of Highway 50 and Traditions Parkway in Dayton, close to Tesla’s Gigafactory.
Preliminary investigations by the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol suggest that the driver of a Tesla Semi truck may have fallen asleep at the wheel at the time of the crash. Reports indicate that this incident represents the first known fatal accident involving the latest model of Tesla’s electric Semi.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the Tesla Semi collided with two passenger vehicles at the intersection. One of these vehicles was a vintage Volkswagen Beetle, which was severely impacted during the incident. Both occupants of the Beetle, later identified as Sergio and Jennifer, succumbed to their injuries, while the driver of the Semi emerged unscathed. In addition, another individual involved in the crash was airlifted to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Many in the local community have expressed their grief over the couple’s untimely passing. A family friend, Jennifer Bauer, described the Villanuevas as having “hearts of gold,” highlighting their dedication to volunteer work for a local animal rescue organisation, Boxers and Buddies. Bauer shared, “They would have given the shirt off their backs, and there was nothing they wouldn’t do for anyone.” She continued, saying, “They were a positive light” in the lives of those around them.
Tesla asserts that its electric Semi is equipped with a range of advanced safety features designed to ensure stability in various driving conditions. The vehicle’s design includes a central seating position, which is intended to enhance visibility for the driver. Additionally, Tesla claims that the architecture of the all-electric truck could potentially reduce the risk of rollover incidents and limit cabin intrusion in the event of a collision.
The unfortunate crash site lies approximately 38 miles southwest of Tesla’s Gigafactory, where the electric Semi is produced. The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol is actively investigating the incident, and updates regarding their findings are awaited.
As the community mourns the loss of the Villanuevas, a GoFundMe page has been established to support their young son, who shares his father’s name. The campaign was initiated by Stefanie Villanueva, Sergio’s ex-partner, who expressed that while no amount of money can replace the love and guidance of a father, the funds would help alleviate financial pressures during this difficult time. She stated, “Your generosity can help relieve some of the financial stress so Sergio can focus on being with his family and honouring his dad’s memory.”
This devastating accident has raised concerns regarding road safety and the potential dangers of commercial driving, particularly in terms of driver fatigue. As investigations continue, both Tesla and the Nevada State Police have yet to issue detailed statements addressing the incident.
The local community is left grappling with the loss of two cherished individuals whose kindness and selflessness were well known. Further developments regarding the investigation are expected, as authorities aim to uncover the precise circumstances that led to this tragic event.
