A couple has found themselves in legal trouble after an audacious proposal atop the Empire State Building’s antenna. Ivan Beerkus, 32, and Angela Nikolau, 33, were charged with felony reckless endangerment and burglary following their daring climb to the pinnacle of the iconic New York City skyscraper on July 1. They appeared in Manhattan criminal court on July 2, facing serious allegations.
The couple, who gained notoriety for their penchant for scaling tall structures without safety equipment, reportedly ascended the building’s 1,454-foot antenna as part of an engagement stunt. According to prosecutors, Beerkus intended to make the occasion “special” for Nikolau by proposing at the climactic height.

In a statement provided by the Associated Press, authorities revealed that the duo unfurled a black banner emblazoned with the words, “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” Beerkus then seized the moment to propose to Nikolau, an act which he later stated was an expression of love.
Promptly after their climb, Beerkus and Nikolau were taken into custody. Reports indicate that after reaching their lofty goal, the couple carefully collected the banner and made their way down to a lower ledge, where they sealed their commitment to one another. Nikolau subsequently shared images from the event on social media, showcasing her engagement ring against the breathtaking backdrop of the New York skyline.
As the couple was making their descent, police had been monitoring the situation for roughly half an hour. They awaited the antenna’s power to be turned off before dispatching officers to intercept Beerkus and Nikolau, as provided in a criminal complaint. Investigators reported finding a broken lock on a security door leading to a restricted access area on the building’s 104th floor, which is necessary for accessing the antenna.
The Empire State Building features an observation deck on the 102nd floor, but any access above this level is tightly controlled and requires a key card. It is understood that the couple bypassed this critical security measure, contributing to the serious nature of the charges against them.
Both Beerkus and Nikolau, who are Russian nationals, cooled their heels in custody overnight following their climb. In court on Thursday, they remained mostly silent, though Beerkus did express his belief in love to waiting reporters outside the courtroom.
Their attorney, Jason Krinsky, defended the couple, suggesting that such an extraordinary proposal should be admired rather than condemned. “What a way to propose — something you can only dream of,” Krinsky remarked to the media responding to the outpouring of public attention surrounding the case.
While the couple’s escapade received significant media coverage, an Empire State Building representative addressed the incident, confirming that it had been resolved with cooperation from the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The spokesperson reassured the public that there was no danger posed to tenants, visitors, or those on the Observation Deck at that time. They also emphasised that the Empire State Building provides a range of legitimate options for memorable marriage proposals.
As of now, the fate of Beerkus and Nikolau remains uncertain as they prepare to confront the charges levied against them. Their adventure has not only made waves in the realm of thrill-seeking but has also reignited discussions about the delicate line between romance and recklessness. Their next court appearances will likely reveal more about the couple’s intentions and the consequences of their gravity-defying act.
As the case unfolds, many will be watching to see how this daring act of love plays out within the judicial system.
