In a heart-wrenching tale of loss and remembrance, Krystal Torres reflects on the tragedy that claimed her grandmother, Alicia Torres, and her partner, Jose Olvera, during the catastrophic floods that struck Texas Hill Country last July. The floodwaters descended upon the region unexpectedly, taking with them the lives of two individuals who had shared over 15 years together, leaving family and friends grappling with their sudden absence.

Krystal, 23, vividly recalls the joy of sharing her life milestones with her grandmother, particularly the birth of her second child, Emmanuel, in October. She had intended to send a video to Alicia, who she fondly looked to for guidance and support. Yet, with the tragedy still fresh in her mind, those plans were set aside, overwhelmed by the weight of grief. “I just kind of stopped and froze, and started tearing up,” she shared. “It’s just sad that I don’t get to share my other child with her.”

The couple’s bond was particularly special; Krystal considers Olvera a grandfather figure despite not being related by blood. Their connection began in Mexico and blossomed after both faced the heartbreak of losing previous partners to cancer. For four decades, Olvera had managed Fairweather Ranch, nestled along the scenic Guadalupe River, where family gatherings were cherished.
Just weeks prior to their untimely deaths, Krystal’s family celebrated Alicia’s 67th birthday with her favourite piña colada cake. “My grandma loved spending time with her family,” Krystal noted, emphasizing the importance of shared moments and the warmth of familial ties. Memories of summertime visits to the ranch form a tapestry of a joyful childhood, as Krystal recalls days filled with Olvera’s tales of hunting and caring for the land.
The morning of July 5, 2023, heralded a devastating turn of events. Krystal received an anxious call from her sister, Ana Gonzalez, informing her that their grandparents were missing. In that moment, a frantic search ensued, uniting family members and friends in a collective effort to locate Alicia and Olvera. Though the search was momentarily halted by evacuation orders due to the ongoing threat of floods, hope lingered.
Tragically, Olvera’s body was discovered less than 50 feet from their home, a poignant reminder of the disaster’s reach. Alicia’s body was later found approximately two miles downstream. “It was sad seeing my aunts and uncles searching for their mother, but it was an honour being able to be there and know that we were all still united,” Krystal reflected.
Amidst the grief, a small semblance of peace emerged for the family when they found Alicia’s Bible near the location of Olvera’s discovery. “We believe that my grandma took her bag with her, and inside her bag was the Bible, which later got washed away by the current,” Krystal explained, highlighting the enduring connection to her grandmother’s faith.
The past year has been marked by profound sorrow for the family, particularly for Krystal’s mother, Aurelia, one of Alicia’s eight children. The family’s visits to the ranch, once filled with laughter and love, are now tinged with sadness. “We would always go out and visit the ranch and go to the lake and to the dam, and spend our time over there,” Krystal remembered.
Despite the challenges they face, Krystal emphasises the importance of keeping Alicia’s spirit alive. “It’s been hard but the nice thing is that we get to keep her memory alive.” The family finds solace in the knowledge that they treasured their time together, never taking those moments for granted. “We don’t feel any guilt as a family that we never went to visit her or that we never did anything for her,” she added.
As the Torres family continues to navigate their grief, Krystal remains resolute in her desire for Alicia and Olvera to be remembered as loving souls who embraced life and family. “It’s still a shock,” she remarked quietly. “Sometimes I still ask, ‘Why my grandparents?’” Their story serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring power of love and memory within families.
