In an emotionally charged incident, Tammy Blevins is seeking the safe return of her father’s ashes, which were tragically stolen from her car during her journey across the United States. This distressing event took place while she made a stopover in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on June 25. Blevins had been travelling from California to Colorado with plans to bury her father’s ashes alongside those of his late wife.

Blevins, the daughter of the late Charles Landrum, expressed her disbelief and regret over the theft, stating, “I would have never thought that somebody would do that.” Acknowledging the mistake of leaving valuables in her vehicle, she shared her feelings candidly with local news outlets, saying, “I take full ownership of that… but I would have never thought that somebody would do that. And so, I will own that for the rest of my life.”

During a stay at a Best Western hotel near Interstate 25, Blevins discovered the rear window of her car had been shattered the following morning. Upon inspecting the damage, she found that crucial items, including an urn in the shape of cowboy boots containing her father’s ashes, were missing. In addition to this irreplaceable item, several of Landrum’s medals were also taken.
After filing a report with the Albuquerque Police Department, Blevins has expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the police. Five days had passed without any updates, leading her to voice her concerns. “I don’t understand why they don’t call people back,” she noted. “Even if you don’t have any information on this, you’d think they’d at least call.”
Charles Landrum, who passed away in February at the age of 95, had a distinguished career as a cryptologist for the Navy before he transitioned into education. Blevins shared her father’s wish to be laid to rest next to his beloved wife in Colorado, emphasising that recovering his ashes is her utmost priority. “To be honest with you, just to get my father’s urn and his ashes and remains back, that’s the number one priority. If we’re able to recover any of the other items, that would be a bonus,” she asserted.
Despite the distress of her ordeal, Blevins conveyed gratitude for the support she has received from the local community in Albuquerque. Residents have reached out with encouragement and have attempted to assist her in various ways, even though no viable leads have yet emerged. She expressed her appreciation, acknowledging their kindness, “They’ve reached out, they tried to give a couple tips, they haven’t panned out yet, they’re very supportive, and we appreciate that so much.”
Blevins has made an earnest appeal for the safe return of the urn, urging anyone who may have taken it to consider the significance of the item. “Please do the right thing and return it,” she implored. Her heartfelt plea encapsulates the gravity of losing her father’s ashes, a sentimental legacy that is irreplaceable.
The case remains open with the Albuquerque Police Department as they continue to investigate the theft. In reaching out for assistance, Blevins hopes that her father’s urn will be recovered, allowing her to fulfil his final wish. The incident serves as a painful reminder of the vulnerability people face when travelling, particularly when it involves treasured family belongings.
As the search continues, Tammy Blevins remains hopeful that the urn will be returned, restoring some solace amid her grief. The community’s response suggests a collective empathy for her situation, showing that even in challenging times, human connection and support can light the way.
