A baggage handler employed at Portland International Airport (PDX) has been arrested on charges related to the alleged theft of firearms from travellers’ luggage. The incident is reportedly linked to a series of complaints from passengers who found their guns missing after arriving at their destinations.

In June, several travellers reported that their firearms had been stolen from their bags. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) began investigating the claims when they received multiple reports of missing firearms after flights departing from PDX. This prompted them to examine security footage, which indicated that Terell Wayne Overton, 51, had access to the luggage during critical times.

The investigation took a decisive turn when a passenger, whose semi-automatic handgun was reported as missing on June 28, had placed an Apple AirTag within their bag. The FBI tracked the location of the AirTag, which ultimately led them to Overton. As authorities approached him, he allegedly attempted to discard a backpack, which was later discovered to contain the missing firearm.

Overton had been working at PDX as a contracted baggage handler since early 2023. Following his arrest, he faces serious charges, including theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Prior legal troubles date back to 2005 when he was convicted for distributing cocaine.
In a statement to the media, Overton reportedly expressed personal challenges, disclosing that he had a child to care for and mentioning his girlfriend had recently lost her job. However, when questioned on whether these circumstances contributed to his alleged theft, he chose not to elaborate further.
The Port of Portland has confirmed that Overton is no longer employed by the airport. Molly Prescott, a spokesperson for the Port of Portland, stated that the local police and federal officials have been actively involved in the investigation regarding the suspected theft of firearms from checked luggage. She assured that the airport continues to operate normally and safely, in light of this incident.
Authorities have expressed their commitment to maintaining security and vigilance within the airport. The investigation underscores the importance of protecting passengers’ belongings and ensuring that any unlawful activities are swiftly addressed.
As the investigation proceeds, and as Overton awaits his legal proceedings, airport officials reiterated their cooperation with law enforcement to enhance security measures and restore full confidence to travellers. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in securing airports and preventing theft, especially involving items as serious as firearms.
The case highlights a growing concern among airport authorities and the public regarding the safety of checked luggage. It raises questions about the protocols in place to safeguard belongings and the potential vulnerabilities that may exist in the system. As such, discussions on improving airport security and monitoring personnel will undoubtedly gain prominence in the wake of this unsettling event.
As the matter unfolds, community safety remains paramount. Passengers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity within airports to ensure the safety of all travellers. The incident at PDX is a stark indication of the risks faced, even at secure locations such as international airports.
