A devastating incident involving the death of an 18-month-old boy has rocked a Florida community. Leslie Novoa, the owner and director of the A World of Discovery Academy, is sharing her heartbreak over the tragic event that unfolded on Monday, June 29. The young boy’s father was confronted with the unbearable reality of having inadvertently left his son in the car throughout the day instead of dropping him off at the early education centre.
“This is a tragedy that happened to them and to all of us,” Novoa expressed, reflecting on the deep sorrow shared among the parents and the wider community. She has known the family for six years and described them as “very loving and caring,” adding that the toddler was not the only child they had enrolled at the academy.

According to Novoa, the parents had arranged with one another to alternate school drop-offs for their children. On the day of the tragic incident, the couple decided that their older child would not be attending the centre. Consequently, when the younger child did not arrive, the staff assumed everything was in order, unaware of the devastating oversight.
Novoa recounted how the father intended to take his son to the academy that morning but subsequently forgot that the toddler was still in the car when he left for work. It was not until he returned to the centre that afternoon, expecting to reunite with his son, that the horrifying truth began to unfold.

Upon realising what had occurred, the father opened the back door of the vehicle and then quickly shut it again, letting out a chilling scream that resonated throughout the facility. Novoa, witnessing the agonising moment, directed someone to call for emergency assistance.
Emergency services received a report of a deceased child inside a vehicle at the A World of Discovery Academy located on NW 4th Street in Plantation at approximately 5:39 p.m. When first responders arrived, they confirmed the worst fears: the child was indeed dead.
The Plantation Police Department has since announced that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s death is currently underway. However, both the police and the Broward County Office of Medical Examiner and Trauma Services have not provided any immediate comments on the ongoing inquiry.
This tragic event is reminiscent of a similar pattern observed across the United States, where a significant number of child deaths have occurred due to heatstroke from being left in vehicles. Data from the National Safety Council revealed that in 2022 alone, there were 31 reported fatalities resulting from such incidents. Historically, an average of 37 children under the age of 15 perish every year in the U.S. due to being left unattended in hot cars.
The academy has become a focal point for the community’s grief, as parents and staff grapple with the immense loss. A World of Discovery Academy has been known as a nurturing environment for local families, further amplifying the sorrow felt by those affected by this tragedy.
As the investigation continues, Novoa remains committed to supporting the grieving family as they navigate this unfathomable loss. The incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the responsibilities that come with parenthood and the unintended consequences that can arise from a moment of forgetfulness.
This situation highlights the need for increased awareness regarding the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, particularly during the sweltering summer months. While the community mourns the loss of a young life, advocates are urging for stronger educational initiatives to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
As the weeks progress, the focus will remain on supporting the family affected by this grief-stricken event and ensuring that other families are informed and equipped to safeguard their loved ones against similarly devastating outcomes.
