According to the Conecuh County Coroner’s Office, there were four individuals inside the property at the time of the fire. While two people managed to escape and were later treated for injuries, Hensley and Mostellar succumbed to their injuries at the scene and were officially pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The circumstances surrounding the fire are currently under investigation, involving not only the Conecuh County Coroner’s Office but also the Evergreen Police Department and the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office. Local authorities have emphasised that, out of respect for the victims’ families, further details about the incident cannot be released at this time.
In a statement on social media, the Evergreen Police Department expressed its condolences: “The Evergreen Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic loss.” They also promised to share updates with the public as more information becomes available.
Both Hensley and Mostellar were described as bright young men enrolled in business studies at the University of Alabama. Their fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon, indicated that the two men were part of an unfortunate gathering that took a deadly turn during their hunting expedition.
Tributes have been pouring in for the deceased students. A former head football coach at UMS-Wright Preparatory School, Terry Curtis, fondly remembered Mostellar, who once played as an outside linebacker on the team. Curtis recalled how Mostellar would ask many questions, initially thought to be humorous. However, it was later evident that these questions were aimed at improving his skills as a football player.
Hensley was also acknowledged for his contributions, having graduated from St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile. In remembrance of him, the school hosted a vigil on the day following the tragedy, providing a space for students and faculty to honour his memory and reflect on his positive impact within the community.
The tragic loss has cast a pall over the University of Alabama, a community typically vibrant and full of life. As the investigation into the fire proceeds, students and faculty alike are mourning the loss of two promising lives.
At this time, the University of Alabama has not responded to requests for comment regarding the incident or any condolences they might wish to express for the families of the victims. In the wake of this heartbreaking event, the community continues to come together to support those affected and to process the sudden loss of these two young men.
As investigations proceed, many are left with a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community support during times of such profound grief. Further updates are anticipated as authorities work to determine the cause and circumstances of the fire.
