Martha, affectionately known as Irene, fell while tending to her garden, prompting her husband, Rick Van Egmond, to rush to her aid. In an unfortunate turn of events, Rick fell himself while trying to assist Irene, leaving both of them stranded outside in the heat. Authorities report that they waited for over three hours before help arrived.

According to Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard, it is believed that Irene succumbed to heat exposure during this lengthy wait. Efforts to reach the Bolton Police Department and the Hinds County Coroner’s Office for further comment were unsuccessful.
Devastated by the loss, Rick shared with NBC affiliate WLBT that he misses his wife deeply, stating, “I miss her more than anybody will ever know. But she’s with Jesus Christ in heaven. And I’ve got a promise that I’m going to see her again.” He remembered Irene as a devoted mother of seven and a woman of faith who radiated positivity.
Rick recounted their final moments together in the garden, reflecting on the couple’s long and fulfilling life that included raising their children and travelling together. During his emotional remembrance, he urged the public to be mindful of the heat, noting, “It gets hot out there, and if you don’t have a way to get up, it can happen quick.”
In light of this tragic event, Rick emphasised the importance of taking precautions against the heat during the summer months. He lamented that they were outdoors for an extended period, hinting that had help arrived sooner, the outcome might have been different. “We were out there about three hours, and she was ready to go to church Sunday,” he said.
Amid his sorrow, Rick also shared his desire for Irene to be remembered for her faith and kindness saying, “I want her to be remembered as a loving, caring, Christian lady. She expressed Jesus wherever she was… people could see Jesus in her.” Her legacy, he hopes, will serve as a reminder of the importance of community and timely assistance.
Rick conveyed his faith in a heartfelt social media post, finding solace in the belief that Irene died in a joyful place surrounded by her beloved flowers. He expressed the hope that she is now “celebrating with Jesus”.
Irene’s funeral service is set to take place at the First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, on 2 July, bringing together friends and family to honour her life. The community will gather to mourn her passing and celebrate the impact she had on the lives of those around her.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prompt emergency response in critical situations and the potentially dire consequences when help is delayed. As families and individuals enjoy the warmer weather, it is essential to prioritise safety and remain vigilant against the health risks posed by extreme heat.
