President Donald Trump recently celebrated the inaugural flight of the new Air Force One, which has been generously gifted by the Qatari government. The occasion took place on July 1 and marked a significant moment for the President as he flew to North Dakota to attend the dedication ceremony of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library.

While addressing reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland prior to the flight, Trump expressed his enthusiasm for the aircraft, calling it “maybe the greatest commercial plane ever built.” He credited the emir of Qatar for this gift, stating, “Frankly, we couldn’t build a plane like this because we wouldn’t be willing to spend the kind of money necessary.”

The newly introduced Boeing VC-25B Bridge, constructed from a military variant of the Boeing 747-8, is set to be transferred to Trump’s presidential library foundation upon the end of his term. The Qatari government originally discussed selling the plane for an estimated $400 million before deciding to gift it to the United States.
The aircraft has undergone significant updates to ensure it meets the security and operational standards required for a U.S. presidential transport. While the specifics of the renovation costs remain classified, estimates suggest that taxpayer funding for its upgrade may reach nearly $1 billion. However, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink indicated during a congressional hearing that the cost projection for retrofitting could be “probably less than $400 million.”
Accompanying Trump on the historic flight were his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, as well as Don Jr.’s recent wife, Bettina Anderson. The choice of seating arrangements was particularly noteworthy, as the President’s family added a personal touch to this ceremonial occasion, sharing their experiences on social media.
In his remarks, Trump described Qatar as “a country that’s treated us very well,” highlighting their status as a key ally in the Middle East. The Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has been regarded by Trump as a significant figure, and he felt this aircraft would not only serve as a practical gift but also as a representation of the strong ties between the two nations.
Despite this apparent camaraderie, Qatar has faced criticism regarding its human rights record. Both Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, alongside the U.S. State Department, have documented serious allegations, including human rights abuses and the mistreatment of migrant workers—over 90% of Qatar’s population. These issues have sparked debates about the ethical implications of such a significant gift from a country under scrutiny.
The new Air Force One boasts an updated colour scheme reflecting Trump’s preferences, featuring red, white, dark blue, and gold, alongside a prominently displayed American flag on its tail. This contemporary design is intended to convey a sense of pride in American aviation and symbolism of the nation on the global stage.
Trump’s choice of the Qatari aircraft is seen as a temporary measure until Boeing completes two new 747-8s, which are expected to be delivered by mid-2028. The President has insisted that the outdated previous version of Air Force One, which had been in service for over 35 years, was not befitting of the American presidency.
As the former President continues to navigate public and political life, his acceptance of this aircraft from Qatar signifies not just a practical upgrade in presidential travel, but also reflects on the intricate relationships and complexities of international diplomacy that influence such gifts. Whether this act of generosity ultimately strengthens ties or raises further questions about international partnerships remains an open debate.
