Donald Trump has introduced a new version of America’s commemorative passport, celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The updated design features a full-size portrait of Trump, marking a departure from the earlier version unveiled in April, which only displayed his face alongside a representation of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The former president, now 80, used his social media platform Truth Social to share the enhanced passport design on 26 June. In his post, he noted, “The U.S.A.’s New Passport, which says, ‘Welcome, but be good!’” The new passport showcases a larger image of Trump standing in front of the Resolute desk in the Oval Office, an adaptation from a photograph displayed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. In this design, his portrait is positioned against the text of the Declaration of Independence, while the reverse side continues to exhibit John Trumbull’s iconic painting of the signing of the historic document.

The reimagined passport will be available in limited quantities exclusively at the Washington Passport Agency, as confirmed by the State Department. A spokesperson previously stated that the agency intends to release a select number of these specially designed passports for the milestone, which is commonly referred to as the semiquincentennial. The new passports will incorporate artistic elements while upholding existing security measures that safeguard American passports.
Although applicants will not incur any extra fees when seeking the limited-edition passport, its availability will be confined to the Washington location, meaning that those renewing passports online or at other locations will receive the standard design. This limitation adds a unique characteristic to the passport, likely making it a collector’s item given its notable historical context.
The new design has garnered attention and will be prominently featured at the Great American State Fair, taking place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This fair is part of the celebrations centred around the country’s 250th anniversary, which is expected to draw significant interest from the public.
Officials have indicated that this commemorative passport will be the default issue for individuals renewing their passports in person at the Washington Passport Agency once it becomes available. Those who apply for passports elsewhere will receive the current design rather than the commemorative one.
Interest in the updated design is considerable, with media outlets seeking further clarifications from the State Department regarding the specifics of the rollout. As of now, officials have not provided additional details on the start date for issuing the new passports.
As Americans prepare to mark this significant anniversary in 2026, these passports are expected to attract attention not only for their design but also for what they represent in a historical context. The issuance of a Trump-themed passport is likely to spark debate, reflecting the former president’s divisive presence in American politics.
The commemorative passport has already drawn enthusiastic reactions, with many individuals eager to secure a piece of collectible memorabilia as the United States approaches this landmark celebration. As more information becomes available, citizens across the country will be looking to acquire one of these limited-edition documents, marking their own connection to the nation’s 250-year journey.
