Christian Pulisic, a prominent forward for the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT), has garnered global attention throughout his football career. However, the roots of his passion for the sport can be traced back to his parents, Mark and Kelley Pulisic, who both have rich backgrounds in soccer and played a significant role in shaping his journey.

Mark and Kelley first met as student-athletes at George Mason University in the late 1980s. It was there that their love story began, setting the stage for a family deeply connected to sports. The couple welcomed Christian in 1998, and he grew up alongside his two siblings, Devyn and Chase.
While Kelley opted to step back from competitive play after her college days, Mark continued to pursue a successful career, both as a professional indoor soccer player and as a coach. He played for the Harrisburg Heat in the Major Indoor Soccer League for eight seasons. Beyond his playing career, Mark’s extensive coaching experience has been pivotal, guiding both men’s and women’s teams at Lebanon Valley College and numerous minor league clubs across the U.S.
Christian’s mother, Kelley, had her own impressive credentials as a talented defender. She played with the youth team Braddock Road Shooting Stars, known for producing star players like Mia Hamm, and later competed for George Mason University. Following her retirement, Kelley remained actively involved in athletics, contributing as a physical education teacher, ensuring the family’s commitment to sports extended beyond mere participation.
Notably, Mark’s parents emigrated from Croatia, which further enriched their family’s sporting culture. Christian shares a special bond with his grandfather, who introduced him to chess, allowing them to connect beyond the realm of football. This family history highlights the multicultural influences that have shaped Christian’s upbringing and character.
Christian was born on 18 September 1998 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. At the age of seven, the family temporarily relocated to England so Kelley could complete her teaching sabbatical. It was a significant year for young Christian, as he joined a local youth club and developed a deep love for soccer. Mark recalls this period as a turning point for his son’s passion for the game, stating that Christian “fell in love” with football during their time abroad.
As a child, Christian was surrounded by soccer, thanks in no small part to Mark’s influence. Kelley recalls how her son was always seen with a ball, using it as his first step towards learning to walk. She emphasised that while their involvement encouraged Christian’s passion, it was evident that he had an intrinsic love for the game.
Mark and Kelley’s dedication paid off as Christian flourished in the sport. By the age of 13, he earned a spot on the U-15 Boys’ National Team and went on to captain Team USA at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. His skills attracted attention from numerous European clubs, leading to a pivotal moment in his career when he signed with Borussia Dortmund shortly before turning 16.
This transition required Mark to support Christian not only emotionally but practically, as they shared an apartment during his early years in Germany. Christian described living alone in a foreign country at such a young age as “the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.” Yet, he navigated these challenges with the values instilled by his parents: a strong work ethic and a fearless mindset.
As Christian’s football career advanced, culminating in a move to Chelsea in 2019 and later to AC Milan in 2023, Mark and Kelley proved to be his staunch supporters. Mark expressed a deep understanding of Christian’s potential from an early age, highlighting the boy’s persistence and desire to confront challenges head-on. Kelley echoed similar sentiments, recognising her son’s determination to excel and learn everything related to soccer—a trait she believes cannot be taught.
In discussions about parenting, Kelley emphasises the importance of kindness and humility, stating their family values extend far beyond athletic achievement. “Hardworking and kind are the two most important things we have taught our children,” Kelley remarked, underlining her pride in Christian’s character off the pitch as well.
Ultimately, the Pulisic family embodies not just a love for soccer but a deeper commitment to personal growth and ethical values. As Christian continues to shine on the global stage, the support and guidance from Mark and Kelley remain central to his story, proving that behind every successful athlete are dedicated parents who nurture both talent and character.
