According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), the driver involved was a 77-year-old man attempting to park when the accident occurred. Investigators reported that his foot inadvertently slipped off the brake pedal and onto the accelerator, leading to his vehicle colliding with the bakery’s entrance. At the time of the crash, three individuals were present inside the bakery, including Zion Branch, the young employee who tragically lost her life as a result of the incident.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene only to find Branch unresponsive due to the injuries she sustained during the impact. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the location. The driver remained at the scene throughout the incident and was found to show no signs of intoxication, leading investigators to classify the accident as a vehicular incident rather than a criminal act. The HCSO’s vehicular crimes division is currently conducting a thorough investigation.
Alongside Branch, another victim—a customer in the bakery—sustained injuries and was subsequently transported to a local hospital for medical attention. The circumstances surrounding the injury, however, were not detailed in the initial reports.
Branch had graduated from Sconzo Early College High School the previous year and had only recently begun working at Nothing Bundt Cakes. Her family revealed that she was diligently saving for college, with aspirations to begin her junior year in the upcoming autumn semester. The untimely loss of such a young life has deeply affected those who knew her.
HCSO Major Anthony McConnell expressed the heartbreak felt by the community, urging local residents to keep the families affected in their thoughts and prayers. “It’s just a terrible situation,” he remarked, acknowledging the profound impact this incident has had on those associated with the bakery.
The ambience of the tragic event was conveyed through the words of Liliana Trevino, one of Branch’s colleagues. She recounted the chaos within the bakery as her team initially mistook the sound of the crash for a building collapse. Trevino described the panic that ensued as they searched for their co-worker, only to be informed by their manager that Branch was no longer with them. This heart-wrenching revelation exemplifies the shock and devastation felt by all employees and patrons that day.
In a statement, the management of Nothing Bundt Cakes expressed their profound sorrow over the loss of Branch, whom they fondly referred to as one of their “Joy Creators.” They extended their deepest sympathies to Branch’s family, the injured customer, and everyone affected by this incident. The company assured the community that they are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation by local authorities, stating that their immediate priority is to support their staff and team members during this difficult period.
As a result of the incident, the bakery has temporarily closed its doors in order to focus on providing support for affected employees and the wider community. The tragedy has left many reflecting on the fragility of life and the importance of community support in times of loss.
The investigation into the incident remains open, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and assess the circumstances surrounding the crash. As the community seeks to heal, they are reminded of the significance of compassion in the face of tragedy.
