In a troubling incident in rural southeastern Ohio, authorities apprehended four adults on felony child endangerment charges following the discovery of 16 children in dire need of medical attention. The children, who ranged in age from just 18 months to 18 years, were found on Tuesday, June 30, in a home located in Hamden, a small village situated approximately 60 miles southeast of Columbus.

The adults taken into custody have been identified as Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders. Each faces 16 counts of child endangerment—one charge for every child rescued from the alarming situation. Following their arrest, the group was slated for arraignment on Wednesday.

An investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with the local sheriff’s department, led to the execution of a search warrant at the site. The conditions inside the home were described by Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson as “deplorable,” with a level of neglect that he asserted was unimaginable for any child. “Their medical condition was so severe that the primary concern of our law enforcement was getting them medical treatment and to safety,” he reported during a press conference on Tuesday. The urgency of the situation was underscored by the fact that two of the children had to be airlifted to Level 1 trauma centres due to the critical nature of their injuries.
Attorney General Wilson expressed his horror at the discovery, labelling the situation as “pure evil” and commending the law enforcement officers for their courageous efforts in addressing what he termed “one of the worst environments” he has encountered in his professional career.
Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer revealed that the suspects are not residents of the Hamden area and appeared to have been transient, which raises concerns about the extended circumstances surrounding the conditions the children faced. Wilson further clarified that while the children were found in the company of the Siders, he could not disclose whether they were related or if they had been placed in foster care, citing the ongoing investigation. He did emphasise, however, that this matter did not involve human trafficking.
Officials have assured the public that every effort would be made to deliver justice for the children involved. “Justice will be served for these kids,” Wilson stated, affirming the commitment of law enforcement to ensure the safety and well-being of the young individuals involved in this distressing case.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter, and concerns about the welfare of the children have prompted calls for action from community members and the wider public. The wellbeing of those rescued is paramount, and local agencies will work to provide the necessary support and care as the situation evolves.
In light of this alarming incident, authorities are reminding the public to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspected child abuse or neglect. The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline is available around the clock, offering assistance and resources for those who may suspect abuse. It can be reached at 1-800-4-A-Child or 1-800-422-4453.
As the legal proceedings continue against the four adults arrested, the focus remains firmly on the health and safety of the affected children, ensuring they receive the necessary care and support during this incredibly challenging time.
