As an executive producer on the project, Witherspoon played a pivotal role in realising this new chapter in Elle Woods’ journey. According to Lauren Neustadter, another executive producer, the entire concept for “Elle” stemmed from Witherspoon’s original idea. “This whole show was her brainchild,” Neustadter revealed in an interview. The intention was clear from the beginning: to create an open and inclusive audition process to find the fresh face of the character that captivated audiences years ago.

In September 2024, an open casting call was launched, allowing countless aspiring actresses the chance to audition for the coveted role of young Elle Woods. Neustadter noted that Witherspoon believed in providing young women with an opportunity to showcase their talent. The response was overwhelming, with thousands of audition tapes submitted over the following months. Ultimately, Lexi Minetree emerged as the clear choice among the candidates.
Minetree, a 25-year-old actress, impressed the casting team with her unique interpretation of the character, which not only paid homage to Witherspoon’s original performance but also introduced her own flair. Neustadter praised Minetree’s audition process, recalling her incredible self-tape where she even creatively riffed on the iconic Harvard admissions video from the original film. “She really honours the character in such a beautiful way,” Neustadter remarked.
Witherspoon’s enthusiasm for Minetree was palpable when she spoke at a recent New York City event for fans. Emotions ran high as she recalled her initial reaction to Minetree’s audition video. “It took my breath away,” she admitted, noting that the young actress not only captured the essence of Elle but also conveyed a warmth and authenticity that made her stand out. Witherspoon expressed pride in passing on the torch of Elle Woods to Minetree.
In the series, Elle Woods’ character takes shape in a time prior to her famed adventures at Harvard Law School. Set in 1995, viewers can expect to witness the young Elle as she encounters complex friendships, explores forbidden romances, and makes questionable style choices — all pivotal moments in her growth. The series aims to deepen the exploration of Elle’s character, focusing on the strengthened relationship with her family, particularly with her mother, as they face life’s challenges together.
Joining Minetree in the cast are notable actors including Tom Everett Scott, June Diane Raphael, and James Van Der Beek. Together, they will help bring to life the vibrant world that Elle inhabits, ensuring that both long-time fans and new viewers alike will be drawn into her story.
As the premiere date approaches, excitement for “Elle” continues to build, and Witherspoon’s involvement serves as a beacon of hope for the series, promising a journey filled with laughter, love, and resilience. With its rich blend of nostalgia and fresh storytelling, “Elle” is positioned to capture the hearts of those familiar with the original film while beckoning in a new generation of fans.
“Elle” is set to begin streaming on Prime Video on July 1, ready to delight audiences with its combination of familiar charm and innovative storytelling. As Witherspoon noted, it is a series that embraces the spirit of Elle Woods while allowing for an exploration of themes that are both timeless and relevant to today’s society.
