Alex Blumenfeld, a former finance professional, has traded Wall Street for wildlife in a heartfelt pursuit of her lifelong dream to work in conservation. Now at the age of 24, Blumenfeld reflects on her transformative journey as she immerses herself in ethical wildlife management and community engagement at a wildlife reserve in southeastern Zimbabwe.
Her emotional arrival at the reserve was a moment of overwhelming joy. “I started crying out of sheer joy and gratitude,” Blumenfeld shared, recalling the day she first set foot in the place that would become her new home. “I couldn’t believe I was finally being given the privilege to live on a wildlife reserve and contribute to the mission of protecting such an incredible ecosystem.” This poignant experience marked the beginning of a new chapter, moving away from a comfortable finance career that had begun to feel unfulfilling.

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Blumenfeld enjoyed her time working in finance on Wall Street, but the longing for a more meaningful existence lingered. “I left my finance job in search of something that felt deeply meaningful,” she recounted. She yearned to contribute to a cause that resonated with her deeply ingrained passion for nature.
Her path to conservation was woven over years of defining moments in her childhood. Whenever faced with life’s challenges, Blumenfeld would retreat to a patch of nature near her home—a place where she could find solace while surrounded by the soothing sounds of wildlife. “I’ve always felt most at home outdoors and among animals,” she reflected. However, for a long time, she didn’t see a career in conservation as a realistic option, telling herself that it was merely a dream for a life where financial limitations didn’t exist.
After a few years in finance, a pivotal moment struck her consciousness. “I wanted my career to be driven more by purpose than pay,” she realised. With newfound determination, she pursued opportunities that would enable her to dive into conservation work, a quest that proved more complicated than she had initially anticipated. Many wildlife reserves had policies against hiring internationally, and numerous programmes focused more on tourism rather than genuine conservation efforts.
Eventually, her search led her to a reserve in Zimbabwe, which stood out for its commitment to rigorous scientific research, ethical wildlife management, and community involvement. “When I came across such a well-run, science-driven conservation organisation, I was immediately drawn to it,” she noted, expressing excitement over the rare opportunity to engage meaningfully in conservation efforts.
Today, Blumenfeld works as a fundraising and strategy consultant at the reserve, a role she embraces wholeheartedly. Her responsibilities involve translating decades of research and conservation work into compelling narratives aimed at inspiring support for the reserve. “The work being done here is undeniably important,” she expressed, appreciating the chance to collaborate with a passionate team dedicated to safeguarding wildlife.
Shortly after her arrival in Zimbabwe, Blumenfeld experienced a defining moment that reaffirmed her decision to embrace this new chapter. While driving through the reserve, she caught sight of a lioness standing in the middle of the road. As the majestic creature approached their vehicle, she was struck by the surrealness of the encounter. “Almost every day, something would happen that I simply couldn’t believe was real,” she said, describing sightings of leopards and rhinos in her vicinity—an extraordinary experience for someone so newly immersed in the environment.
These incredible moments inspired Blumenfeld to engage a wider audience through social media, where she began sharing her experiences on TikTok. With over 136,000 followers, her videos have garnered millions of views. “I hope that by inviting people into my daily life, they begin to understand not only how beautiful these places are but also the incredible effort required to keep them that way,” she explained, emphasising the necessity of dedication to wildlife conservation.
Reflecting on her life-changing choice nearly a year later, Blumenfeld expresses a deep sense of contentment. Not once has she doubted her decision to follow her passion. “Without question, I’d make the same decision ten times over,” she affirmed, urging others to pursue their own dreams.
“Buy the ticket. Go get the firsthand experience,” she advises, encouraging individuals to steep themselves in the environments and causes that resonate with them. In a world filled with possibilities, Blumenfeld’s journey is a potent reminder of the rewards that await those brave enough to chase their dreams.
