In a heartwarming story from North Carolina, Jessica High has recently opened up about the remarkable growth of her baby boy, Axyl. At just eight months old, he has achieved a size that has left many people, including his mother, astounded. Jessica, a 34-year-old mother of four, has noted that she has never experienced such rapid growth in a baby before.
Axyl made his debut into the world weighing a modest 7 lbs and 4 oz. However, within just six weeks, his weight had nearly doubled to 13 lbs and 6 oz. By the time he reached six months of age, he tipped the scales at an impressive 33 lbs and 7 oz, which significantly exceeds the average weight for male babies according to the World Health Organization.

“I had never experienced a baby growing as rapidly as Axyl,” Jessica said. Her concerns about her son’s extraordinary growth prompted her to consult his paediatrician when he was about four months old. “That’s when his little rolls really started popping out,” she recalled. The rapid changes in size first became apparent when Axyl was merely 10 weeks old and already outgrew his 12-month pyjamas. Jessica described her feelings at that moment, saying, “I remember thinking, ‘This can’t be normal.’”
Fortunately for Jessica, the paediatrician was reassuring. With over 20 years of experience, the doctor confirmed that Axyl was healthy and developing as he should. During an early appointment, the doctor had already commented on his strength, noting how rare it was to encounter such an active newborn during examinations.
As Axyl continues to grow at an astonishing rate, Jessica faces challenges in keeping up with his clothing needs. With three other children—Phoenix, aged five, Pyper, aged twelve, and Seth, aged seventeen—she had prepared a wardrobe full of hand-me-downs and gifts, only to find that many of the outfits were worn for far less time than expected. “When he outgrew everything so quickly, I passed some on to family members and sold the rest,” she explained.
In a bid to save on expenses, Jessica has opted to limit her purchases of new clothes, focusing only on essentials such as shirts, onesies, and trousers. This, however, has not stopped the public from expressing various opinions about Axyl’s size. While some have speculated whether he is “too big,” and others have inaccurately accused her of overfeeding him, Jessica finds comfort in her supportive community.
“The comments have been a journey,” she stated. “I feel incredibly fortunate to have so much support—from lifelong friends to strangers from around the globe who follow Axyl’s story.” Jessica echoes the wisdom of her grandmother, reflecting, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and she feels that her supporters form part of that village. For every negative comment, she emphasises, there are numerous messages filled with encouragement.
Following her son’s emergence as a viral sensation, Jessica made a conscious effort to stay positive and not respond defensively to critics. “I know the kind of mother I am, and my children receive regular medical care. Any concerns I’ve had have been openly discussed with their doctor,” she maintained.
Amid the whirlwind of attention, Jessica cherishes the time spent with Axyl. Describing him as one of the “calmest and happiest babies” she has ever known, she shared that he smiles readily, enjoys making people laugh, and displays an inquisitive nature. “The funny thing is, he has absolutely no idea how big he is. He acts just like any other baby,” she explained.
In a recent interview, Jessica expressed her gratitude for her healthy family. “I prayed for healthy babies, and I’ve been blessed with four,” she said. She acknowledges the unique privilege of sharing her family’s journey, along with Axyl’s remarkable growth, with a global audience. “He has supporters from India, the UK, Australia, and the United States, and we’re incredibly grateful for their kindness,” she added.
Ultimately, while the internet may label him as “the giant baby,” to Jessica, he is simply her beloved son. She hopes that their story will promote positivity and raise awareness about children whose growth patterns differ from the norm, reminding everyone that being different does not equate to being problematic.
