New Jersey Representative Tom Kean Jr., who has been absent from Congress and public life for nearly four months, returned to the House floor on June 30 to share personal insights about his health struggles. This marks his first appearance since March 5, and in a candid speech, he revealed that his absence was caused by a diagnosis of depression.

The 57-year-old Congressman, who is the son of former New Jersey Governor Tom Kean, addressed his colleagues, expressing gratitude for the patience and support he received during his challenging period. “I rise today with deep gratitude for the patience, the kindness, the prayers, and the concern that have been shown to me and my family over the course of the last several months,” he stated. Acknowledging his typically private nature, he admitted that delivering this particular message was difficult for him.

In his address, Kean explained that his health issues began with hospital visits for testing due to concerns that initially seemed manageable. “I was given the diagnosis of depression,” he shared. Kean emphasised the multifaceted nature of the illness, referring to its physical and emotional impacts. “Until you’ve experienced it yourself, it is difficult to fully understand how powerful this illness can be,” he added.
Kean elaborated on his initial hesitations regarding his treatment. He described a sense of obligation towards his family, constituents, and the institution of Congress, which made him reluctant to take an extended leave. However, after discussions with medical professionals, he accepted their recommendation for a longer hospital stay, believing it would expedite his recovery.
The congressman’s absence from Congress resulted in him missing over 100 votes during a critical time as he faces a challenging midterm re-election campaign. His prolonged silence led to speculation and concern regarding his wellbeing. Kean’s aides had previously indicated that he was dealing with personal health issues, and House Speaker Mike Johnson affirmed the need for transparency. Johnson noted, “There’s no conspiracy involved in this…He’s got a health condition, as he said.”
During his time away from the public eye, Kean received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump for his re-election bid. However, his absence from campaign efforts did raise questions among Democratic opponents, who questioned what impact this could have on what is anticipated to be a highly competitive congressional race.
On returning to the House, Kean expressed that he had no intention of misleading both the public and his colleagues regarding his timeline for recovery. “Those were the best estimates that the doctors could provide,” he explained. He acknowledged that mental health conditions often lack predictable recovery timelines. “There is no timeline for healing, only the work of getting better, one day at a time,” he stated, highlighting a universal truth that many individuals facing similar issues encounter.
In this moment of vulnerability, Kean also reached out to others who might be grappling with their mental health. He asserted that mental health struggles should not be a partisan issue, stating, “This touches every community, every family and every corner of this country.” He reassured those facing similar battles that requesting help is not a sign of weakness, but rather, a demonstration of strength.
Kean concluded his address by reaffirming his commitment to returning to the work he loves, appreciating the support he has received throughout his journey to better health. As he steps back into his role in Congress, Kean aims to advocate for mental health awareness and understanding, hoping to inspire others to seek help during their own struggles.
