According to reports from AL News and WBRC 6 News, firefighters were alerted to the situation at the Cahaba Blueway Moon River Canoe Launch in Irondale at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time. Montecino-Navarro was with his family, enjoying a day by the river when the alarming event unfolded. Eyewitnesses revealed that neither he nor the children had any swimming experience, which would ultimately contribute to the tragic outcome.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) and the Irondale Fire Department (IFD) confirmed that Montecino-Navarro endeavoured to save his children, but unfortunately became submerged in deep water. Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates indicated that the group was likely caught in a river current, complicating their efforts to stay afloat.
A dedicated dive team was dispatched to the scene for search and recovery. After two hours of intense searching, Montecino-Navarro’s body was discovered in approximately eight to 12 feet of water, roughly 25 feet from the initial point of entry. This devastating incident has left the community in shock and mourning.
Survived by his wife and five children, Montecino-Navarro was an employee at Chick-fil-A in Gardendale and Fultondale. The fast-food chain expressed their sorrow at the loss of their colleague through a heartfelt statement shared on social media. They described him as a devoted family man who worked diligently to provide for his loved ones.
Chick-fil-A stated, “We are deeply grieved by his loss, but not without hope, as we know he is now in a better place.” The company has initiated a community event on Thursday, 2 July, intending to honour Montecino-Navarro and support his family financially. A portion of the proceeds from this event will be directed to assisting his grieving family.
Mike Holmes, one of the franchise owners of Chick-fil-A, spoke to WBRC 6 News about Montecino-Navarro, noting that his actions were entirely reflective of the kind of person he was. “As tragic as it is, it sounds exactly like something he would do, as his family was his whole world,” Holmes remarked. He described Montecino-Navarro as a cheerful individual who brought joy to those around him.
In addition to the community event, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to provide further financial support to Montecino-Navarro’s family in the wake of this heart-wrenching incident. The crowdfunding effort has already raised over $1,800 out of a target of $7,000, highlighting the community’s willingness to extend a helping hand during this difficult time.
The local authorities, including the JCSO and IFD, are still processing the incident, and further comments may follow as investigations continue. As friends, colleagues, and the wider community mourn the loss of a beloved family member, the story of Israel Montecino-Navarro serves as a solemn reminder of the risks that can arise during seemingly harmless outings.
The local community collectively rallies behind Montecino-Navarro’s family, demonstrating an outpouring of compassion and support as they navigate this monumental loss. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery of parents in the face of danger and the profound impact of sudden loss on a family and community.
